Ricing Moon

First lines:

It is a season whose chief quality is abundance: of rain, of harvest, of community.

Here, it is a time of pilgrimage and storms; at home, of a different kind of dance.

East or west, it’s called the Ricing Moon, the time when the wild rice that historically served as our people’s primary food source is ready for harvest. It’s not an easy process, by any means; it requires far greater labor than merely picking fruits from a vine, and simply gathering the rice is only the first of many steps.

Steps in a dance.
