Spirit Moon

First lines:

Some call it the “Great Spirit Moon,” a distinct from the Little Spirit Moon immediately preceding it, the month of the small snow. It’s less a “God Moon” than simply a recognition of the fact that Winter’s own spirit, True Winter, coincides with this time.

Where I am from, it’s a time of lead-gray days and darkly bitter nights, a time when pipes freeze and fingers, too, when something as simple as walking outside is a risky venture. It’s not always like that now, of course; despite not having spent so much as a winter’s day there in nigh on a quarter of a century, read enough of climate change’s effects to know that winter there is not what it used to be.

Not even during the time of the Spirit Moon.
