It feels like January.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's sunny, mostly, but lots of stormclouds.

And lots of wind.

It's cold. Bitter, brutal cold. Tomorrow's April, but it feels like January.

Way behind; I'm looking at four now three days of all-out work, trying to get the tax stuff finished and turned over by the first of next week. I also need to be able to focus on making sales, but I've had precious little time for any of that. Speaking of which, I posted five brand-new works by Wings the other night, here (one is sold already, but the other four are still available, and they're phenomenal). With luck, I'll have two more fabulous new works by this evening (they're done, but I have to get the descriptions written and so forth). Anyway, all of our links are here; emphasis on sales and testimonials for now:

  • Sales here
  • Testimonials here
  • Amazon wishlist here (the Zero-Odor sprays are the priority right now; the house smells constantly of wet dog at the moment, and we can't get these locally);
  • Patreon here;
  • Ko-fi here.

There's lots of fabulous work on the site, so please share all of the links.

Friday Feature: The Gifts of the Winds and the World to Come

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's our Friday Feature at The NDN Silver Blog, with a pair of works to remind us that, despite the current brutal cold, warmer, calmer, more beautiful days are not so very far off now. It's a necklace from Wings's masterwork signature series, The Four Seasons, and a cuff that was never meant to match but somehow suits it perfectly, both animated by the spirits of summer and carrying the gifts of the winds and the world to come.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Inquiries via the site's Contact formWe will still need to make consistent sales in this fourth year of pandemic and loss,  and there are many opportunities and occasions for gifts to come, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Vicious.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Clouds scudding fast across the sky. The winds are vicious, and they're driving all the cloud cover so fast that we may not get anything of the forecast snow tonight.

We get all the fallout from the winds, though. Just ask my joints. Sixty degrees yesterday, and snow tonight [allegedly]. The snow would be seasonal; 60 degrees is not.

#TBT: Prayers For Green Beyond the Winds

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's #ThrowbackThursday at The NDN Silver Blog, with a #TBT work that dates back only to last November, and a special commission by a client and friend. It's one in Wings's informal series of small barrette pairs, these manifest in powerful symbolism and beautiful stones that remind us: There is a place for prayers for green beyond the winds that bedevil these drought-ridden days of early spring.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. This work will never be duplicated, but if the general style or stones speak to your spirit, simply inquire via the site's Contact form; Wings can create a version uniquely your own. We will still need to make consistent sales in this fourth year of pandemic and loss, and there are many opportunities and occasions for gifts to come, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

That one small thing.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

I was trying to catch a shot of the red-tail, but it was moving too fast, diving after something on the slopes. What it did show me, though, was just how little snow is on those slopes.

It's warm today, too warm for March. April's literally around the corner, and the first anniversary of the governmental negligence that sparked the largest wildfire in state history. We'll be spending an inordinate amount of time scrutinizing every cloud mass at the horizon these days to see whether it's' the kind that holds water or the kind that's made of smoke and flame.

Speaking of smoke and flame, this week has been a mess already. Murphy's Law in action on seemingly every front, and those flames are nipping at my heels now I have GOT to be left to do my work, and I can't seem to get that one small thing.

And there's so much in the pipeline, just waiting. I still need to get the tax stuff finished and turned over, and that needs to be done by the first of next week. I also need to be able to focus on making sales. Speaking of which, I posted five brand-new works by Wings the other night, here (one is sold already, but the other four are still available, and they're phenomenal). From the Season's Sacred Fire

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's one of Wings's newer masterworks, one that honors an ancient power, beauty, and medicine, and the ancestors who passed them down to all the generations to follow. It's a necklace animated by the spirit emergent from the season's sacred fire, one that sustains life for us all.

Always work in progress.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's been a week, and it's only Tuesday.

Yesterday was just nightmarish, for all sorts of reasons that no one wants to hear, so never mind. Today was yet another day spent on errands, including shipping four orders, and wow, when they said they increased shipping rates this year, they were not remotely kidding. This was . . . a lot. Home for the evening, and I'm trying desperately to get caught up just for today, never mind all the rest. And there's always, always work in progress, on every front.

I am not going anywhere tomorrow. I don't care. Whatever it is, it's going to have to wait. I have too much to do here, and walking is causing me so much pain right now besides. I'll be trying to power through a bunch of stuff between now and Friday, because it's got to get done now.

And there's so much more of it in the pipeline, just waiting. I still need to get the tax stuff finished and turned over. I also need to be able to focus on making sales. Speaking of which, I posted five brand-new works by Wings the other night, here (one is sold already, but the other four are still available, and they're phenomenal). Red Willow Spirit: The Earth's Spring Ceremony

Photo copyright Wings, 2023;

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's an edition of Red Willow Spirit for the shift from winter to spring, for the high-running rapids that are the gift of the thaw, and a new focus for the year. It's a contemplation of what sits at the center of all things, and the purpose, obligation, and commitment we find in the Earth's spring ceremony.

Not a damn thing.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

A smattering of snow; a lot of bare branches up near the top. All that mud we had two days ago? Dried up. And temperature feels much colder now than it did in the middle of all of last week's snow and ice: bitter, brutal, dangerous cold, courtesy of the trickster winds that seem here to stay.

This is the worst season for me, and the winds are why. My illness spirals completely out of control in this weather, and there is not a damn thing I can do about it.

So I will be slow, and brain-fogged, and generally mostly useless for the foreseeable. Things will be a little better, I hope, after next week, when presumably all the tax garbage will be completely off my desk (pleasepleaseplease), if for no other reason than that it's not hanging over me any more. The bad part will be writing the damn checks.

The rest? Who knows. I'm doing the best I can, but that's not worth much right now.

Monday Photo Meditation: Among the Rocks, a Healing Green Renewal

Photo copyright Wings, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a Monday Photo Meditation for the first signs of spring color amid a world that has in recent years grown manifestly more dangerous. It's a lesson, too, about being willing to seek hope and inspiration beyond our immediate view, a reminder that while the drought still holds the land in its grip, it's still possible to find, among the rocks, a healing green renewal.

All the little fuzzy things.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Yeah, that's clouds and fog in the background (and snow inside them). It's all the little fuzzy things in the foreground that are making me extra-miserable.

Not only them, of course; there's all the grass pollen, and all the other tree pollens, and weeds, and shrubs, and whatever. But those are the most visible right now, and I know they're going to turn into those strands of pollen that have me coughing and sneezing and my eyes itching for weeks on end, so they're the ones I'm glaring at right now.

Speaking of breathing issues, to whomever the kind and generous soul was who took the CF O2 concentrator off the wishlist last night, I am forever grateful. I've been trying to get one of those for years (a continuous-flow model that doesn't disrupt sleep). When I finally had the funds set aside for it, I couldn't find a seller who would guarantee delivery, and then the pandemic hit, and there haven't even been any in stock for three years now; apparently the hospitals bought them all up in a vain effort to deal with the COVID load.

But now, I might finally get some sleep, even if it is spring.

Sleep's good, because it helps me shove the ever-increasing pain levels in a box in my brain; no sleep, no pain management. And I need to be able to park it somewhere, because there's too much that needs doing (and did I mention that it's snowing again?). Anyway, laundry's in, wood's in, about to get dinner marinating and then finish loading the dishwasher and run it, then switch out the laundry, then . . . oh, hell, I don't know, more online work, and evening chores, and tax stuff. There's so much more of it in the pipeline, just waiting. I still need to get the tax stuff finished and turned over. I also need to be able to focus on making sales. Speaking of which, I posted five brand-new works by Wings last night, here (one is sold already, but the other four are still available, and they're phenomenal). Where the Medicine Gathers

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a reprise of one of Wings's old traditional designs, a personal favorite wrought in vintage style  and powerful symbolism that shows the way of medicine. It's a cuff to honor the seasons and spaces where the medicine gathers, as well as those who live by its gifts.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Inquiries via the site's Contact formWe will still need to make consistent sales in this fourth year of pandemic and loss, and there are many opportunities and occasions for gifts to come, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Five incredible new works by Wings.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

All right, I've been trying to get these posted for two days now.  At last, five incredible new works by Wings.

First up is the extraordinary cuff shown above (and directly below). This is old-school silverwork, a tribute to the techniques and labor of the Indigenous smiths who were his own ancestors:

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This one is called Mountain Lightning, and it's phenomenal. It's big (more than two inches across), and solid (heavy fourteen-gauge sterling silver). There are no stones, and no small stampwork, either; it's all lines scored deeply, freehand, using a short chisel-end stamp, a heavy 5-lb. steel hammer wielded repeatedly to create the six lines that form the scored borders and the five zigzagging lines down the center that create the four parallel lightning bolts. This one is weighty, literally and metaphorically; it's also priced accordingly. You can read its full description here.

The second work is much smaller (and also priced accordingly). It's the latest in Wings's informal series of two-stone self-adjusting rings:

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This one is called Sunrise and Moonglow, and it suits the piece perfectly. The band is wide and solid, formed of sterling silver pattern wire in floral patter that evokes the flowing grace of the Art Nouveau period. At either end, set into saw-toothed bezels, are solitary round cabochons, highly domed and glowing from within, one sunny citrine, the other rainbow moonstone. It's self-adjusting, but if you need to have it made significantly smaller, that can be done. You can read its full description here.

The next three works are all pairs of earrings. The first pair is formed from a pair of repurposed conchas from one of Wings's oldest [and no longer extant] works:

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This pair is called Lodgepole Sky; if you look closely at the design on each hand-cut, hand-domed concha, you'll see why. Eight "lodgepoles" in the form of freehand scoremarks radiate from the center; between the ends of each sits a single traditional lodge motif, stamped so deeply that it scallops the edges ever so slightly. At the center, into round saw-toothed bezels, sit tiny perfect cabochons of OLD natural turquoise in a perfect sky-blue shade, veined with golden-hued spiderweb matrix. He made the conchas decades, maybe generations ago; the stones are even older. You can read the full description here.

The second pair is one of a pair itself, the first of two sets of floral earrings in a new saw-cut design:

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This pair is called Wild Blue Sage, a reference both to the floral design and to the color of the jewels at center. Each blossom is saw-cut and scalloped freehand, with flowing veins stamped on each petal. The petals, too, are saw-cut freehand to separate them from each other, raising them slightly to add to the doming that creates a three-dimensional form. At the center of each, in a saw-toothed bezel, sits a tiny round iolite cabochon, the color of the sage blossoms and of the rain the keeps them growing. You can read its full description here.

Fifth and finally, it's the second pair of floral earrings, these channeling a very different sort of blossom:

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This pair is called Prairie Evening Primrose, one of the hardy indigenous blossoms found here that is deceptively delicate in appearance. These, too, are domed like conchas, saw-cut freehand just like the other pair, and veined with similar stampwork. At the center of these, though, sit single round cabochons of glowing pink mussel shell. You can read their full description here.

As always, Wings's main page is here. Inquiries via the site's Contact formWe will still need to make consistent sales as we enter this fourth year of pandemic and loss, and there are many opportunities and occasions for gifts to come, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

All we've got is the wind.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

That's all that's left of the snow from the overnight hours. Just a dusting, no more; now all we've got is the wind, and the brutal cold. Supposed to bringing more snow tomorrow, just a little, but it would be nice if we could have it without the damned gale-force winds.

Then again, I shouldn't be complaining, giving what Mississippi's dealing with today. Same's true of parts of South Asia, even though US. media can't be bothered reporting on the earthquake there, never mind on the damage in its aftermath.

It's just the that winds worsen my pain levels exponentially, and I have been in so much pain for so long that my body is breaking under the weight of it.

But we did get a visit from a third bald eagle this morning, so there's that. I'll post a couple of the shots on Patreon and Insta later.

I'll also be working on getting the descriptions done for those five new works, so barring catastrophe, they should be up later today or tonight. It's a cuff (oh, my god, is it ever a cuff; I want this one myself, but it's meant to go elsewhere), a rings, and three pairs of small earrings. The bracelet is big and heavy and expensive, but the others all have more modest price points.

Which means that I need to get to work. There's so much more of it in the pipeline, just waiting. I still need to get the tax stuff finished and turned over. I also need to be able to focus on making sales. Anyway, all of our links are here; emphasis on sales and testimonials for now:

Weaving a Blanket For Winter's End

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work for these spaces that overlap seasons, and for a world in need of protection and healing now. It's a ring wrought with old perfect stones, a tribute to the night skies, at work weaving a blanket for winter's end.

Pumpkin, Grounded No More

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This morning, Wings went outside to feed Miika and let the chickens out of the coop. He was back a few moments later to let me know that we had lost our Red: pumpkin, grounded no more, can fly with Cobalt and her sisters now.

It's not a good photo, but Punkin, as she was also known, somehow managed to evade the camera most of the time. At least here, in this shot from a few years ago, you can see her face. More often, despite being by far the largest of our chickens, she managed to hide herself behind the others save for a flash of rusty red feathers here or there.

When I say "hide," of course, I don't mean it literally; it was more that she was active, always finding something to peck on the ground or pull from the soil, ruining my shot at the very last second. In addition to being the largest, she was also by far the oldest of our girls, and while she wasn't exactly thrilled with being picked up, she would let me do it if I needed to scoop her up and into the coop quickly (for example, on sighting a coyote).

And because she was the oldest, today's developments were not exactly a shock, although even last night she was moving around pretty briskly for an old girl (far better than I am, to be entirely truthful about it). She was, if memory serves, one of our second crop of chickens, born [hatched] on April first or second of 2014. That would put her only days shy of her ninth birthday, and for a chicken? That's ancient. But she was always a tough little girl, still laying up until a couple of years ago. By then, she'd more than earned her rest from all of that. She was not the alpha (that status belongs to the younger and more aggressive Australorp, Jade), but she was also nowhere near the bottom of the flock. Instead, she seemed to occupy her own special space, able to discipline others if she felt the need, and entirely undisciplinable by them. She never abused it; during Cobalt's last weeks, it was Pumpkin who sat with her, side by side or face to face in broody position, just keeping her company. She did the same with Mica [Little Bent-Beak] and others; her advanced age seemed to give her special empathy for those with disabling issues.

For months, now, we've noticed Pumpkin slowing — still lively, just slower. Given her age, none of that was surprising; what was surprising was just how active and engaged she still was. And it appears that she was the same last night, going to sleep as usual and then, in the morning hours, simply not waking up. As ways to depart go, it's about as good as it gets.

But I'm going to miss my big red girl, the Rhode Island Red hybrid who outpaced all the others on size, on age, and for a while, on egg production, too. She was one the sweet girls; chickens can be bullies, but she mostly about caring for the others.

We love you, little Punkin girl. Thank you for years of beautiful eggs, and for taking care of the whole flock.

Turbulence.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This was what chased us home today. We had an early doctor's appointment for Wings (nothing serious; just injections for pain and a referral for something different for his knees), but then there were all the other errands, including the once-every-couple-of-months trip to Albertson's to stock up on enough to last us for a good long while.

It's a blessing to be able to do it. Walking around that big store on those hard floors is also murder on my body. I'm in so much pain right now I'm almost numb — not to the pain, not in the slightest, but my brain and soul are numb. I literally can barely walk, and I don't know what to do anymore with this level of pain and dysfunction.

Of course, the weather just makes that worse. It's less to do with the barometric pressure than it is with the wild swings between warmth and bitter, brutal cold (we had the former this morning and the latter now), and more than anything else, these godawful destructive winds. If we'd gotten that storm, I would actually have felt better, but instead it went around us to the south, meaning that we got all the murderous turbulence of the winds and only a couple of hundred snowflakes.

Turbulence is a good word for everything going on right now. I need to get through the next three weeks, and then I'm just going to . . . stop. Oh, I'll do the bare minimum, but that's it.  I'm so tired, and my body can't take this anymore.

And there's so much more in the pipeline, just waiting. I still need to get the tax stuff finished and turned over. I also need to be able to focus on making sales.

But as I keep saying, we have new work! The bolo is done, and it's here, and it's fabulous. There's another cuff (amethyst), plus a casual necklace and a bolo (both turquoise, in very different styles). I posted those last week, here and here. I also got Wings's newest ring posted a few weeks ago, and more importantly, I got that incredible new collar-style necklace up, here (and you need to see it, all of it, all of the photos of all five pendants and the beads). It's extraordinary, and it's looking for its home. I also got the last new cuff, pendant, and earrings posted two weeks ago, here; the pendant is sold, but the other two remain available for immediate purchase (and they're both ::wow::). And speaking of which, I may have five new pieces as early as tonight, a cuff, a ring, and three pairs of earrings. Or not. I'm so far behind now, I'll be lucky to get the usual stuff done. We'll see. Anyway, all of our links are here; emphasis on sales and testimonials for now:

Looks like more stormy weather.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Supposed to be no precipitation today, but we've already had snow flurries. Looks like more stormy weather on the way.

Of course, there are storms, and then there are storms

It's a rough day for me, a marker I'd rather forget. And it's not helping me focus on all the work I need to get done. Tomorrow's going to be one of those days, and I probably won't even be able to get to the usual posts until tomorrow evening at the earliest, and I'm still behind on everything else.

I posted those a few nights ago, here and here. And speaking of which, I may have four new pieces as early as tonight, a ring and three pairs of earrings. All of our links are here; emphasis on sales and testimonials for now:

  • Sales here
  • Testimonials here
  • Amazon wishlist here (the Zero-Odor sprays are the priority right now; the house smells constantly of wet dog at the moment, and we can't get these locally);
  • Patreon here;
  • Ko-fi here.

There's lots of fabulous work on the site, so please share all of the links.

#ThrowbackThursday: Wildflowers Born of Alpine Snows

It's #TBT at The NDN Silver Blog, with a specially commissioned #ThrowbackThursday featured work that dates back only to mid-January.  It's a hair cuff created for a dear friend, one wrought in the sharp and graceful relief of wildflowers born of alpine snows.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. This work will never, ever be duplicated, but if the general style speaks to your spirit, simply inquire via the site's Contact form; Wings can create a version uniquely your own. We will still need to make consistent sales as we enter this fourth year of pandemic and loss, and there are many opportunities and occasions for gifts to come, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

The rabid kind.

Storm coming, again. Right now, though, it's all wind, the rabid kind that go after everything in their path.

The kind that go after my joints, too. I'm already about 3 hours behind just on the stuff I had planned to get done in those last three hours, and there's so much more in the pipeline, just waiting. I still need to get the tax stuff finished and turned over. I also need to be able to focus on making sales.
