Green returned.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Where the last two years were only dead and dying bare branches? So much green returned to us now.

Truly, we thought those stands were gone for good. You can see the bare patches along the sides still, but a month ago? It was ALL bare patches, or, rather, one giant bare patch that flowed in front of that peaks and extended to the slopes of the peak beyond it.

It just goes to show, truly, how little is required to reclaim life for this wounded earth, and yet the colonial world keeps on deliberately killing it instead.

It's exhausting.

We have wild weather again today, more wind than rain, but some of both. We're supposed to have a week's worth of rain ahead, a break of two or three days, and then back to the daily monsoonal pattern again. The one drawback is that our highs are only supposed to be in the low to mid-sixties, which is definitely not summer temperatures here.

Still. Given the choice, we'll take this every time.

But as I said, the rest of this week and next will be extra busy, despite my own inability to walk properly these days. Wings did finish the two new pairs of earrings yesterday, but I didn't have time to get them posted; that's hopefully for tonight, along with the new necklace. It all depends on how much I get done in the meantime, which is always an open question these days. We had to have the big wheelchair discussion the other night, and he's told me to start researching and pricing them, because if this is what a couple of days of errands involving me being on my feet in lines will do to me, I can't afford to do it anymore. It will, by definition, have to be a power chair, though, because my hands are too bad to wheel myself that way. And it's surreal to me that I'm even considering this, but this is my life now, and this level of damage and the pain that ensues? I cannot be out of commission like this, and I cannot take that kind of pain.

I have lost so much to this damned disease.

And the pressures don't ease off at all, of course. I will still have the truck repairs to pay for if the damned converter ever comes in, and now we need a part for the fridge that no one will ship. So I need to be chasing sales on every front. In the meantime, all the links are listed below, so please share:

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work for these early days of red flower rain. It's a cuff, big and bold and transcending the boundaries between classic and contemporary, here to deliver a few petals of the First Medicine.

Much more pleasant, too.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Another absolutely beautiful early summer day — because it is summer, regardless of what the calendar says. And it's a relief, because spring this year was exceptionally bad, and I want to be moving on to warm weather at long freaking last.

I'm also glad that stupid holiday weekend is done. That was exceptionally bad this year, too, for the area if not for us personally. Then again, we make a point of staying home at such times anyway. Much safer. Much more pleasant, too.

Speaking of which, the rains are supposed to return tomorrow, which is also good. It means, though, that our schedules will get a lot tighter, because we'll have to dodge intermittent storms to get things planted. It's good that Wings was able to get most of the mowing done this weekend, to keep the mosquitoes down, but there's still all the tilling to be done, and the invasive thistles still have to be dug out. Thanks to colonizers bringing them and the tumbleweeds (and the Russian olives that they still refuse to remove), our land is an invaded, colonized, harmful, wounded mess, and those species have to be eradicated, because they literally destroy indigenous plant species, and the very land itself.

So the rest of this week and next will be extra busy, despite my own ability to walk properly these days. I might have the two new pairs of earrings posted tonight, depending on my own work pace (and the commission with a specific deadline is nearly done). And I did find my gardening bench yesterday, which is good, because as I said then, I don't think I'm ever going to be able to kneel in the earth again. No, I mean that literally. Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's an edition of Red Willow Spirit for summer's early arrival, and for the signifiers of the season at its more beautifully abundant. It's two images linked by a single work of wearable art, all showing the best of our small world here in the full bloom of summer medicine.

That feel of the first days of summer.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's a beautiful day.  Those we all the clouds we had at midday; there are a few more now, but not many. It's warm, and the air holds that feel of the first days of summer.

You know, that magic from childhood, one of those things you don't notice anymore? That.

It helps that I'm slightly more mobile today. I still won't be doing a full workout; I haven't been able to do any floor work for three days, because I can't bend that knee. If I did somehow manage to get down onto the mat, I'd never be able to get back up. But I can bend it ever so slightly now; every few hours, I feel another click as it moves back closer to where it's actually supposed to be. The swelling from there to my toes has gone down quite a bit today, finally, but that won't disappear completely until the stress fracture in the foot heals anyway, so I'm thinking it's time to dig out my old therapy boots. Now I just have to remember where they are; after I went off the lupus med that was aggravating my plantar's fasciitis so horribly (and my insomnia, and my hypoglycemia), we packed them away somewhere, and of course now I have no idea where that is.

Wings has been incredibly productive all weekend, both on the land and in the studio. I might have a couple of new items to post tonight (or not; he's at work on a commission with a specific deadline at the moment). He's gotten most of the mowing done, and he's hoping to start tilling the main garden plot before the day's out. If so, we might be planting as early as later this week; we'll see. Which means I have to find where my gardening bench is packed, too, because I don't think I'm ever going to be able to kneel in the earth again.

I have lost so much to this damned disease.

And the pressures don't ease off at all, of course. I will still have the truck repairs to pay for if the damned converter ever comes in, and now we need a part for the fridge that no one will ship. So I need to be chasing sales on every front. As always, expect everything to be late; I am truly not functional with this kind of pain, and yet I have to get everything done anyway. Monday Photo Meditation: A World In Bold, Bright Flower

A lot left to do.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Finally, real green. What you can't tell from the angle of the photo is that one of the trees in the foreground is dead; two or three more behind the truck are dying; and that weeping willow in the back ground is more dead than alive, but we're trying to save it.

No rain today (and only a faint shower or two yesterday), so Wings got a bunch of the mowing done. There's a lot left to do, of course, but that's true on every single front. At least we don't have to go anywhere this weekend, the wisdom of which was brought home to us last night. I'm not detailing it all again here; just look up "mass shooting Red River" to find out what's known thus far. They're northeast of here (and right-wing colonizer country), but the garbage they bring into the county comes down HERE, too. We wound up with a hospital on lockdown all evening because motorcycle gang members were brought in for gunshot wounds; the town issued a curfew banning travel between 10PM and 4AM and barring all establishments of any kind from selling alcohol as of 10PM; and the the Pueblo wound up needing to lock down for safety, with no one in or out (which affected us not at all, since we weren't going anywhere or having anyone come in, anyway).

Yesterday was also a useless day for me, given the crippling pain that kept me from being able to walk, for the most part. It's improving slowly, courtesy of ice and prednisone and Vick's and resting it, but there's a lot to go before I'm moving remotely normally again. So everything else slows down, and everything gets further behind.

But the pressures don't ease off at all, of course. I will still have the truck repairs to pay for if the damned converter ever comes in, and now we need a part for the fridge that no one will ship. So I need to be chasing sales on every front. As always, expect everything to be late; I am truly not functional with this kind of pain, and yet I have to get everything done anyway. Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work the beauty of the winter blossom at the edge of summer, for threshold spaces and spirits that transcend seasons. It's a cuff, slender and stackable and wrought the old way, to remind us of this land's medicine in these days of transformative flower.

Not so much.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Big pile of clouds to the west, but no rain for us.

Yet.

That's what we thought yesterday, too, and then just before sunset, we got a heavy, soaking rain while the sun shone brilliantly, and the brightest full double rainbow we've had in years.

Which means, I suppose, that there's still hope for later.

For myself, not so much. Several days of errands, walking around on hard tile floors and waiting in long, exhausting lines at multiple places did their damage. By yesterday evening, my left knee had subluxed so badly that I was already in agony, and it only got worse from there. No sleep; none. The pain is some of the worst yet, so excruciating it had me openly sobbing. And no, there is nothing that can be done for it. I can't predict it; there's no treatment; I couldn't afford to go to the ER every time it happens, and I'd never go to this murderous place anyway. But I can barely move; just existing is extraordinarily painful, and this has happened every single week in this godforsaken month.  I now have a very bad sublux (which is a dislocation) of my left knee, a smaller one of my right knee, a small sublux of my right metatarsal, a very bad one compounded by the resultant stress fracture in my left metatarsal, subluxes of left upper arm and both wrists . . . and I am completely out of patience for the abusive structures this country shamelessly refers to as "healthcare." Not one of these policymakers would last a day in my mocs, with this kind of pain, but I can't get any kind of proper treatment because they're abusive, harmful, puritanical assholes.

And I will still have the truck repairs to pay for if the damned converter ever comes in, and now we need a part for the fridge that no one will ship. So I need to be chasing sales on every front. As always, expect everything to be late; I am truly not functional with this kind of pain, and yet I have to get everything done anyway. Looking forward to three days at home, uninterrupted.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Something arrived in the mail today, and I am so profoundly grateful to every single person who sent me Amazon gift cards to make this happen. We had to pay $130-something to cover it, but after seeing me literally spend twenty minutes wrecking my arthritic hands on one pan a week or so ago, Wings ordered me just to do it and be done with it. I have to get them arranged properly on the hooks still, but I spent enough time washing and drying them just to want to get them hung up for the moment (and yes, I know our vigas are dusty; give me another four hours in every day, and I'll get to them). And no, that's not a wagon wheel; it's a weir wheel. It's the one he used, and his dad before him, upstream to turn the water at the main gate. It's not needed anymore, so it became our pot rack. At any rate, I'm looking forward to cooking and cleanup both being much easier, since I basically cook every single meal. No eating out anymore, since no one in government was willing to do the bare minimum to keep COVID in check, not that we did it much anyway, because it costs too much.

Other than that, it's been a hell of a day, at the end of a hell of a week, and not in a good way on either front. I'm glad it's over, and since it's a holiday weekend, I'm hoping we do not need to go anywhere at all for the next three days. The tourists are already overrunning everything, and of course none of them mask. Then again, if they were the kind of people who mask, they wouldn't be invading Indigenous places in a pandemic anyway. As it is, we're just looking forward to three days at home, uninterrupted (and where it's safe).

Presumably, the catalytic converter will be in sometime next week, so we'll have to deal with that mess again. No word yet, and at some point, we do have to go down to Santa Fe; he needs supplies that he can only buy in person, and we need to pick up a part for the fridge from Lowe's or Home Depot, because I will damned if I'll pay an additional $123 for them to deliver a $119 component on a truck. Regardless, I need to be chasing sales on every front. As always, expect everything to be late; hips, knees, ankles, feet are all very bad right now, and both my hands have decided that they're going to be uncooperative (and extremely painful) too, even more than usual. If that's not cause for hope, I don't know what is.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

The recent rain has really brought out the colors on the mountains. More new green on peaks and slopes, and if that's not cause for hope, I don't know what is.

Only a few drops today, and nothing at all yesterday, although there's been rain (and snow) on the peaks. That's fine; the grass is high enough to give shelter to mosquitoes now, and we need it to dry out enough for Wings to cut it. He did get a a little trim and edge work done today, places where the grass was high but relatively sparse and therefore not still wet. But there's a lot to go, and that will require a few rain-free days.

No word on the catalytic converter, so presumably it's not in yet. It's fine; we've had so much to get done this week anyway that it's been good not to be without the truck. And there will be more tomorrow (another day of errands, after a day of heavy physical labor today, and I'm going to be unable to move all weekend, probably). Regardless, I need to be chasing sales on every front. As always, expect everything to be late; hips, knees, ankles, feet are all very bad right now, and both my hands have decided that they're going to be uncooperative (and extremely painful) too, even more than usual. #TBT: The Glow of a Clarifying Light

It's #ThrowbackThursday at The NDN Silver Blog, with a #TBT work from thirteen years ago that inverted a classic traditional style in beautiful form. It's a pair of pendant earrings with the gemstones dancing at the bottom, an ethereal green like that of this morning's sky, awash in the glow of a clarifying light.

More work in progress, as always.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

More work in progress, as always.

It's remarkable, actually, that either of us gets anything done at all these days, given how much of every day we've had to be doing everything but what our work is supposed to be. These will be done in a few days. Me? No guarantees on anything I'm responsible for anymore.

And yes, everything's late tonight. Again. It's been a nightmare of a week on other fronts, and I'm so, so far behind by now that I'll never catch up. We've got the catalytic converter replacement on the truck this week (I thought it was supposed to be today, but apparently the parts not in yet?), and so I really, really need to get the new pieces promoted. Regardless, I need to be chasing sales on every front, but I have so little time to do anything lately. As always, expect everything to be late; hips, knees, ankles, feet are all very bad right now, and both my hands have decided that they're going to be uncooperative (and extremely painful) too. Everything looks haunted.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

That was late afternoon, after the big heavy storm had moved through, but before the next shower. And when. I say "heavy," I mean exactly that: thunder, lightning, high winds, extremely heavy rain, and hail. The hail was so hard and heavy that it chipped a few new holes into the stucco surface of our storage building over near the driveway.

In the other direction? Everything looks haunted. Still. We've had several more small showers move through, but it looks as though there's another thumper of a storm coming from the northwest even now. The land loves it, but I know it's not good for folks down in Mora; the burn scars will be flooding badly now.

It's been a nightmare of a day (week) on other fronts, though, and I'm so, so far behind by now that I'll never catch up. We've got the catalytic converter replacement on the truck this week, and so I really, really need to get the new pieces promoted. The two complete ones are on the site in their respective galleries; it'll be a few days yet before the necklace is complete. The cuff is absolutely extraordinary, and you need to see it. Regardless, I need to be chasing sales on every front, but I have so little time to do anything lately. Good for something, at least.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Juvenile in the house. [If you're too young or old to know, the right Google search will explain.]

I guess dead or dying trees are good for something, at least.

Me, not so much. Tough weekend, rough start to the workweek. And I am so very, very tired of seeing what this country allows, all because it hates Black and Indigenous so people so completely.

I'm tired, period, and I'm not sleeping again, so let's just make this (and hopefully everything else today) short and be done with it.

We've got the catalytic converter replacement on the truck this week, I really, really need to get the new pieces promoted. The two complete ones are on the site in their respective  galleries; it'll be a few days before the necklace is complete. The cuff is absolutely extraordinary, and you need to see it. Regardless, I need to be chasing sales on every front, but I have so little time to do anything lately. As always, expect everything to be late; hips, knees, ankles, feet are all very bad right now, and both my hands have decided that they're going to be uncooperative (and extremely painful) too. In the meantime, all the links are listed below, so please share:

  • Sales here
  • Testimonials here
  • Amazon wishlist here (new priority a replacement for Wings's computer on it and a charging station; and yes, the Zero-Odor sprays, because these days we're back to wet dogs again);
  • Patreon here;
  • Ko-fi here.

There's lots of fabulous work on the site, so please share all of the links.

Monday Photo Meditation: The Light of Emergence, Beckoning

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a Monday Photo Meditation for a season of altered patterns in a land wounded by climate collapse, but still fighting for its survival, and for ours. It's an image of hope, and of grace, of a way out, a way up, a way of beauty and medicine: the light of emergence, beckoning.

The post is hereWings's main page is hereAs always, his photos are available in any of the usual three formats; simply inquire via the site's Contact formWe will still need to make consistent sales in this fourth year of pandemic and loss,  and just breaking even means making at least one sale a week, so shares are much appreciated.

A new line of storms.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

That was this morning; the clouds are closer now. I don't think we'll actually see any rain out of it until evening. Every day, though, it's a new line of storms.

That's a good thing.

Even so, it's not enough to make up for the damage done. Damage still being done. As I said yesterday, it's an unavoidable truth that every window of well-being and survival shrinks by the day. I'm not talking about money; I'm talking about the health of the earth, of the land and water and simple time, and we are feeling the pressure every bit as much as the wild birds who are finding their own seasonal timelines collapsed.

And now we've got the catalytic converter replacement on the truck next week, so I really, really need to get the new pieces up and promoted. The two complete ones are on the site in their respective galleries, but the earrings are also today's blog feature; it'll be a few days before the necklace is complete. The cuff is absolutely extraordinary, and you need to see it. Regardless, I need to be chasing sales on every front, but I have so little time to do anything lately. Rooted In Abundance and Rising In the Light

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's Wings's newest work, a pair of earrings seemingly created specifically for this threshold season and its gifts. It's the Tree of Life, branches still bare but set with luminous jade in a liminal space, reminding us that, we like they, are rooted in abundance and rising in the light.

A heightened forecast.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

This morning was all clouds and fog, although the rain had mostly stopped before dawn. It's bright and sunny now, with plenty of blue sky showing through . . . and a heightened forecast for rain for tonight.

Oh, and a flash-flood warning (not watch, active warning) for the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon Wildfire Complex burn scars just over the ridgeline. This is the other deadly danger of wildfire around here: flood.

Now that the rain has stopped here, though, the pollen is back floating visibly through the air like silky snowflakes, so I fully expect another allergy attack before the rain starts back up again. The birds are back out: two hummingbirds in a turf war outside the window, the red-tails out and actively hunting, and as of last night, a new male downy woodpecker scooping up seeds and stashing them as fast as he can. Everyone seems acutely conscious now of just how little time there is anymore to stock up for the lean seasons.

Speaking of which, that's a heightened forecast if ever there were one, this unavoidable truth that every window of well-being and survival shrinks by the day.

I need to be chasing sales on every front, but I have so little time to do anything lately. As always, expect everything to be late; hips, knees, ankles, feet are all very bad right now, and both my hands have decided that they're going to be uncooperative (and extremely painful) too. In the meantime, all the links are listed below, so please share:

  • Sales here
  • Testimonials here
  • Amazon wishlist here (new priority, because I've been forced to eliminate another staple from my diet just to function rather minimally, and someone mentioned that perhaps our old non-stick pans, which are in fact long since well beyond their useful date, are making the matter worse, so there's a non-PFAS replacement set at the top that would help with cooking/cleanup/my hands/my illness; there's also a replacement for Wings's computer on it and a charging station; and yes, the Zero-Odor sprays are still useful right now, although these days it's dusty dogs, not wet ones);

On Healing Winds

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work for a parting clouds and a chrysalis sun, for the medicine of the rain and the beings that thrive because of it. It's a pair of earrings created in Butterfly's shape and spirit, arrived on healing winds and carrying sunlight on their wings.
