Friday Feature: Small Works of Earth and Water, Fire and Light

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

It's our Friday Feature at The NDN Silver Blog, with a series of traditional works that are diminutive in stature but powerful in spirit. They remind us that that which is small and unassuming has elemental value and worth, just like these small works of earth and water, fire and light.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. inquiries via the site's Contact form. And, as always, sales are very much needed (especially now), so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Now 25% Off: Autumn Horses, Amber Light

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

Amber is the color of autumn here: golden light, golden leaves, and a spirit consonant with fiery life ahead of imminent dormancy. Today, our featured sale work is a horse-fetish necklace wrought in amber by the mother-and-daughter team of Clarita and Vera Tenorio of Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo. It's a perfect gift of autumn horses, amber light.

This work lists for $375, but between now and September 30th, it's 25% off: This necklace in traditional Pueblo style that captures the spirit of the horse in glowing golden color is now only $281.25 (+ s/h/i). Today through the 30th only (only a day and a half!), we have this and a host of other high-end indigenous art all on offer at 25% off — drums, fetishes, pottery, even [non-Wings] jewelry and wall art. Check it all out via the menu bars here on our site, and score some beautiful Native gifts at a great price while you can. Inquiries here, or for those you on FB and Twitter, DM me there.

Snow and rain and leaks and mold, and a $1,000 match! Shares badly needed.

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

I have some beautiful tile photos tonight. No, I can't show them to you, because my laptop insists that my disk is full, despite having stored all my photos elsewhere and deleted them all. I'm at my wits' end with this. Not that my wits are much good lately, anyway; they're kind of moldy, actually.

But . . . . The tile guys mostly finished the main part of the downstairs today; they'll be back tomorrow to do the baseboards and put on a final coat of sealer. They'll be back on Monday to do the downstairs bath, at long last. And  the shower door was delivered today, thanks to a wonderful guy named Matt at the store who took care of getting it on this week's one out of town delivery day, with only a few hours' notice.

No snow here, although plenty on the Spoonbowl and other peaks. Here, it's just rain, although thankfully not anything like last night's, which was of the all-night-long-flooding variety, the kind that caused a massive leak in this place such that we've both been up literally all night and day, since about 12:30 AM, dealing with it. On the plus side, my beloved Ono has a diary up for us, and some generous soul has announced an anonymous $1,000 match, so please go T&R and share, because I'm getting really kind of desperate to get out of this tin can before it literally falls apart around our ears in the middle of a storm.

And just like last night, now comes the cut-and-paste, because my brain is beyond functioning: As I've been saying, the whole weekend was rough; my temper's long since hit the road, and my sanity's about to follow suit. Everything below is cut and paste, because I have no energy reserves for anything else (and I still have work to do tonight anyway), so here goes and please share:

So as I said last night, thanks to all of that, we're back to having to raise actual cash. Wings's PayPal link is at the top of the list, but a few good sales would go a long, long way. To that end, we're marking the official start of fall (which, I might point out, has been here since July 30th for us) with a 25%-off sale on everything in inventory that is made by other Native artists (i.e., not made by Wings; his work is excluded from the sale). Every item on the Web site not made by him qualifies, but it runs only for eight days: today through September 30th, so get your high-end Native art at a big discount while you can. Of course, Wings also has some amazing masterworks on his portion of the site, including some new high-end, high-value pieces that need a home. And while you're at it, please send the links out far and wide, because I'm never going to get well until we're out of this tin can permanently:
  • Wings's direct PayPal link;
  • Wings's site, for sales;
  • Lowe's cards (the physical version) via our Amazon wishlist;
  • Lowe's e-cards (delivered via e-mail) here; and
  • Home Depot cards via the company site. The e-version using my e-mail address is great; I take the tablet to the store with me, and they scan it off the screen.
  • Our Amazon wishlist generally; at the moment, the most urgent item is the second item on the list, the pair of cervical pillows (because we're very close to being able to set up our bed and sleep in the house, but because of the mold, we cannot take any of our linens or pillows with us — yes, my collection of migraine pillows all have to go in the trash, but on the plus side, the new bed might obviate the need to replace all but these two).
  • Wayfair gift cards, to replenish all the furnishings that the RV has destroyed in one way or another.
  • Partial registry #1, from Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's not complete; what's on it so far are drapes for the upstairs, associated curtain rods, and bath rugs for both bathrooms. The longest curtain rods (at the very top of the list) and longest drapes are the priority. [A kind soul let me know that the Wayfair rods were not strong enough for the drapes, and by the time I researched various sources for the right diameter, these wound up being far and away the best buy.]
  • Partial registry #2, from Wayfair. Also not complete, but covers a number of the area rugs and all of the curtain rods/hardware needed for the upstairs.  [Wayfair has apparently never heard of a housewarming and insists on labeling it "bridal," but whatever. Also, the rugs: yes, we'd love to be able to afford Pendletons, but if we had four figures to drop on rugs, we'd get the real thing from actual Diné artists. At Pendleton prices, that's not happening; these are a small fraction of the price, but likely to last a very long time.]
Many thanks and much love from us both, for donations, gift cards, shares, recs, moral support, and just generally helping me not lose my mind. This has been a difficult day health-wise, with my flare itself seeming to flare, no doubt in part due to our high winds and drastic weather changes imminent. I am, at the urging of many different people, trying to compile registries, for lack of a better word, with several different sites to cover all the sundry stuff that's needed to make a house liveable, especially given that we can't take the fa bric furnishing, linens, towels, etc. with us as a result of the mold infestation in this tin can. The two partial registry lists are in the bullet list above; I'm so short on time and moving so slowly now that I haven't been able to add to them, although there are tons of things we will still need. I'm going to try to supplement what's on them over the next few days, assuming we maintain our Internet connection — a storm is on its way right now, and we're supposed to get heavy rains the rest of the week. Oh, and there's already snow in the mountains; it'll be visible tomorrow. Yeah, no, the storm is here (and will be for the rest of the week), and so is the snow. Winter is here, folks. In frigging September.

P.S. And yes, this is still ongoing, natch: IKT has "upgraded" our service (for another $10 a month, natch, and without telling us in advance) to the point that half the time, I can't load anything. When that happens, my e-mail is always the first to go, and I have messages trickling through in fits and starts, some from days ago. If you've e-mailed me and don't hear from me immediately, this is why; if you can reach me on FB or Twitter, DM me there, or try shooting another message through. I'll be sorting through them as steadily as I can, I promise.

#TBT: A Trail of Petals, of Autumn Light

Photo copyright Wings, 2017; all rights reserved.

It's #ThrowbackThursday at The NDN Silver Blog, with a work from nearly a decade ago that took the form of an old traditional design, one reconceived for contemporary seasons. It's a pair of earrings in the iconic blossom pattern of this region, Skystones and fiery rose-reds creating a trail of petals, of autumn light.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. These sold nine years ago, but if the style speaks to your spirit, simply inquire via the site's Contact form; Wings an create a version uniquely your own. And, as always, sales are very much needed (especially now, with snow on the peaks ad labor costs rising fast), so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Now 25% Off: Warriors and Saints

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

It is a time here for warriors and saints, the latter marked by the Feast of San Geronimo at the end of this week, St. Jerome have been denominated the Pueblo's patron saint by colonial invaders centuries ago now. It's perhaps fitting, given that Jerome was the patron saint of librarians and translators, skills of no use in this place to colonizing forces then or now; it's also perhaps fitting that the same name would wind up being conferred, mistakenly, upon on the roader region's greatest warriors, one whose actual name was Goyathlay. And today, you can score an incredible likeness, one rendered in pastel on Japanese kaba paper, for an incredible price.

This work lists for $525, but between now and September 30th, it's 25% off: This beautiful traditional-style pot that mixes media and genres is only $393.75 (+ s/h/i). It's a spectacularly lifelike work by an artist of a sister Pueblo. Today through the 30th only (only 2.5 more days!), we have this and a host of other high-end indigenous art all on offer at 25% off — drums, fetishes, pottery, even [non-Wings] jewelry and wall art. Check it all out via the menu bars here on our site, and score some beautiful Native gifts at a great price while you can. Inquiries here, or for those you on FB and Twitter, DM me there.

September 27th, and winter is HERE. Shares desperately needed.

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

Well, I still have no new photos, because my laptop simply will not cooperate; iPhoto won't even let me delete old photos, so I have no idea whether I'll be able to download these, well, ever at this point.

Today, the regular crew got the batter boards up for the exterior stairs (off the deck) during a (very brief) break in the weather, as well as some indoor work. The tile crew got the kitchen and dining area grouted, and the pebble tile in place on the vanity top; they'll set that tomorrow and work on grouting the rest. My idea for fixing the problem with the downstairs sink is apparently, according to everyone, a winner, and the plumbers will be out on Monday to take care of their part of it. meanwhile, the shower door is supposed to be in tomorrow, so hopefully that and the vanity can be installed the first of the week. Unfortunately, that's not all that happened today . . . .

September 27th, and winter is HERE. It rained all night long, and we awakened to snow on the peaks. I know you're thinking that that's a long way off, but I could've jumped in the truck and driven ten miles up the road and seen it on the ground all around me. Right now, it's pouring again, but it's cold and trying desperately to turn the rain to sleet; if this keeps up, we'll have snow very much closer by tomorrow morning. As in right here outside the door.

We have to get into the house. Not just because of the snow and cold, but also because the mold in this place has now settled firmly into my lungs, and it's never going to get dislodged as long as I'm still inhaling it (and this level of wetness is making it very much worse, especially in the bedroom). We will not be able to do it before next Thursday, October 5th, at the earliest, but we're hoping that by that night (or failing that, next Friday at the latest), we'll be able to sleep and shower up there. Then we can turn to moving in downstairs, too, although apparently we need to replace the couch and we won't have a kitchen for months yet. But at least maybe our bodies can begin to heal a bit.

We Walk In the Path of a Directed Light

Photo copyright Wings, 2017; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's Wings's newest work (the first of four new works in the pipeline, three pairs of earrings and a cuff), earrings completed only this afternoon and made with a pair of very old, very spectacularly beautiful stones from his private collection. They embody the autumn skies, sun and clouds and delicate dark webbing and flutes to channel the sun's silvery rays, a reminder that, by our traditional ways, we walk in the path of a directed light.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Inquiries via the site's Contact form. And, as always, sales are very much needed (especially now — it's September 27th and winter is HERE, with snow on the peaks before dawn, and possibly much closer by tomorrow morning), so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Now 25% Off: Flowers and Checkerboards and Complex Pottery

Photo copyright Wings, 2017; all rights reserved.

Only three and a half days left on our 25%-off sale, which means only three and a half days left to score high-end indigenous [albeit non-Wings] art at some really great prices. Today, it's the last of Camille Bernal's larger pots, one of my favorites for its velvety exterior colors and patterns against a warm and silky red interior. This work lists for $325, but between now and September 30th, it's 25% off: This beautiful traditional-style pot that mixes media and genres is only $243.75 (+ s/h/i). Get it while you can; as noted above, this is the last of her full-sized works in our inventory (there is one other miniature left).

Today through the 30th only, we have this and a host of other high-end indigenous art all on offer at 25% off — drums, fetishes, pottery, even [non-Wings] jewelry and wall art. Check it all out via the menu bars here on our site, and score some beautiful Native gifts at a great price while you can. Inquiries here, or for those you on FB and Twitter, DM me there.

"Sublimated primal scream" edition. Shares very much needed.

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

Welp, it's been a sublimated-primal-scream kinda day. First off, I thought I would have some photos of the finished floor to show you, but nope; my laptop still refuses to download any new photos, no matter how much stuff I move off it. Trust me: It looks very different and very cool, much brighter and almost wet-looking, thanks to two coats of sealer. They need to grout it tomorrow and then seal the whole thing.

The primal scream thing comes largely from the fact that I keep having to repeat myself, a dozen fucking times, and they STILL eff it up.  I have told them ALL, so the regular crew knows this too, at least that many times that the vanity top is going to be tiled with the remaining dark gray pebble tile left over from the floor of the upstairs shower. Which they installed. But no; they go and pull out the unpacked IVORY pebble tile from the downstairs shower, which I found is filled with all manner of things, including the three bags of leftover gray grout that they said they couldn't find. And this is only the latest example. I'm starting to feel as though with men, I have to take them by the hand and walk them through every single thing that needs to be done, even they're supposed to be the experts (which they clearly think they are, since no one ever listens to me). It has also taken me to find what I think will be a way around the fuck-up with the downstairs bathroom sink intakes, and when I explained it (using the leftover downstairs bathroom tile to make a backsplash to cover it), one of them said, "Do you have enough of the gray tile from upstairs to DO it?"  One, yes, irrelevant though it may be, we do. Two, why in the entire hell would I put a black/gray/gold tile backsplash in a bathroom tiled with ivory/terra cotta/cobalt? I mean, I'm at my wits' end trying to keep everybody on task already, much less from destroying the entire color and decorating scheme.

On the plus side (well, sort of), I got the molding on the vanity stained tonight; I'll check it early in the morning and touch it up if need be. Also, one delivery arrived today, at long last, and the shower door should be here on Thursday afternoon. We might not be in by October first, but we might be in (the upstairs) by the end of next week, at least. And not a moment too soon, given my wheezing and shortness of breath, and both of our levels of sheer exhaustion.

Now comes the cut-and-paste, because my brain is toast now: As I've been saying, the whole weekend was rough; my temper's long since hit the road, and my sanity's about to follow suit. Everything below is cut and paste, because I have no energy reserves for anything else (and I still have work to do tonight anyway), so here goes and please share:

Red Willow Spirit: A Fire In the Heart

Photo copyright Wings, 2017; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's an edition of Red Willow Spirit for the first official week of the fall, as our small world here prepares for feasting and harvest. It's a meditation on the nature of the sacred and the now gold-lit paths to reach it, guided by a fire to light the way and warm the body . . . and a fire in the heart, as well.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. It's a coordinated collection of images today, a small series taken moments apart (and of which yesterday's photo is a component image), and as always with Wings's photos, they're available for purchase in any of the usual three formats; simply inquire via the site's Contact form. Also as always, sales are very much needed (especially now, with winter encroaching and labor costs rising), so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

25% Off Sale: Water Is Love

Photo copyright Aji, 2017;
all rights reserved.

Today's featured sale item is by a member of Wings's extended family (an ex-in-law, to be precise), and she's a master at her work.  She's a clay artist who used to specialize in miniatures, but who has long since branched out into full-sized works, and the wedding vases with the braided handles are her hallmark. In her hands, water is not only life; water is love, too. This work lists for $775, but between now and September 30th, it's 25% off: This symbol of love (and life, too) is only $581.25 (+ s/h/i). It's an amazing price for a traditional wedding vase of this quality and size.

She-Wolf's okay, but I'm sicker than a dog again. More delays on getting into the house. Shares badly needed.

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

See those gaps? Those aren't there anymore. But I can't show you the kick-ass edgework they did, because I can't download anything right now. It's been that kind of day.

On the good news front, we took She-Wolf for her vet appointment today. It had been delayed for a week because she, like Raven, and like this entire tin can, got skunked. The dogs smell better; this RV doesn't. Anyway, she has a growth on the right side of her neck, just under the ear, that has expanded significantly, so we were afraid both of malignancy and of the cost of putting her under to have it removed. The vet says it looks benign, and that his take is that he wouldn't put her through that unless it starts to bother her enough to make her scratch it all the time. Net: $27 vet visit. He also said that she has about two years of life left (because she's diabetic), but he also said she'd be fully blind in two months, and we saved her vision for three full years; even now, she's got a little bit of sight left. So we're both ignoring that last part completely.

On the negative side, two deliveries delayed AGAIN, apparently no one listened to what I had to say about what goes where on the vanity, and our move-in is delayed along with a lot else. I don't know how we're going to pay for labor beyond this week, much less the rest of the woodstove install on the 9th, absent making some sales. And I woke up sick again, wheezing and short of breath, and it's the damn mold but I can't do anything about it until we can get moved in over there, so every delay is on my last nerve right now. I had a full-blown panic attack yesterday over all this, and when you can't breathe already, it really sucks just that little extra.

The whole weekend was rough; my temper's long since hit the road, and my sanity's about to follow suit.

  • Wings's direct PayPal link;
  • Wings's site, for sales;
  • Lowe's cards (the physical version) via our Amazon wishlist;
  • Lowe's e-cards (delivered via e-mail) here; and
  • Home Depot cards via the company site. The e-version using my e-mail address is great; I take the tablet to the store with me, and they scan it off the screen.
The longest curtain rods and longest drapes are the priority.
That's [part of] what I'll be working on tonight (and probably the rest of the weekend, given the slowness of my cognitive responses right now), and I need to get a move on, because I haven't gotten to many . . . well, um, any, actually . . . lists yet. Although before tonight is out, I may have one or two partial ones to post — things like rugs and drapes. If so, I'll update accordingly. Well, provided we keep our Internet access; it's been raining off and on since before dawn, but now there's a huge storm bearing down on us from the west, so we'll see.

Monday Photo Meditation: The Season of Fire

Photo copyright Wings, 2017;
all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a photo meditation for the first Monday of fall, at least as the calendar determines it. It's a contemplation of the purifying power of the season's most magical element, the light, as it marks its own season: the season of fire.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. As always, Wings's photos are available for purchase in any of the usual three forms; simply inquire via the site's Contact form. Also as always, sales are very much needed (especially now, as labor costs climb), so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Now 25% Off: Ethereal Spirits, Large and Small (on markdown, PLUS 25 % off)!

Photo copyight Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

It's the first Monday of fall, and the fourth day of our fall 20%-off sale, with a work by a master Comanche artist. Tim Saupitty created a pair of works of similar size and in similar style, one featuring a traditionally-dressed Comanche man, the other a woman. Wings has not been able to bring himself to part with the one of the male figure, but this one is not only for sale at 25% off, it's also marked down by $1,000, thanks to a small amount of water damage (a result of a leak in the ancient adobe walls of our old gallery after massive storms). This work was originally on offer for $2,500; it has since been marked down to $1,500, and between now and September 30th, it's 25% off: This ethereal painting filled with spirits large and small is only $1,125 (+ s/h/i). The artist, by the way, is coming to visit us in a few days, in the company of another Native artist friend who will be here for San G.

Repeat. Shares needed.

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

It's a repeat photo today, because I'm in the middle of a day-long panic attack, and I can't do anything more than cut and paste right now. Nothing's working, I can't fix my health as long as we're in this damn thing, and I'm terrified of never actually making it into the house. And no, I do not want to talk about it; it only makes it worse.

Here is the cut-and-paste from last night, and then I'm going to try to do anything else but house stuff for the rest of the day, before I lose my sanity entirely (because my temper is already gone):

So as I said last night, thanks to all of that, we're back to having to raise actual cash. Wings's PayPal link is at the top of the list, but a few good sales would go a long, long way. Bars and Bands and the Embrace and Space of Wingéd Spirits

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work that reminds us that we all depend upon each other for survival. We live within the bars and bands and the embrace and space of wingéd spirits, and of other spirits, too.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Inquiries via the site's Contact form. And, as always, sales are very much needed (especially now, since we need to cover labor costs well beyond this week), so shares of the site links are very much appreciated.

Now 25% Off: Bear Season!

Photo copyright Wings, 2017;
all rights reserved.

It's day 3 of our "Greeting Autumn" 25% off sale, which applies to all the Native art in our current inventory that is made by artists other than Wings (his work is not included in the sale). We are entering Bear Season now, as the colder air drives them to forage more widely for food before winter's long sleep, and any day now, I expect to see early-dawn evidence of their presence. But we have another bear on offer, one who not only won't bite, but whose purpose is medicine of an especially beautiful sort. And between now and September 30th, it's 25% off: This gigantic, substantial work lists for $2,500, but for the next week, it's only $1,875 (+ s/h/i). For a work of this size and solidity by a Native artisan of such renown, it's a steal.

UPDATED. Tile love. Registry lists in the works. A lot to pay for this week. Sales and shares needed.

Photo copyright Aji, 2017; all rights reserved.

UPDATE: The first two partial registry lists are below, where the bullet-point list is.

Yes, a repeat photo from last night. We went in to walk on it and look at it more closely today and I took some new shots, but my laptop is having download issues again, so no new images for now.

One more day of relative rest, and the engine cranks into gear again. We'll have at least two crews out here on Monday, and probably three, and we've got a lot to get done. Plumbers are paid off, save for this new problem that has presented itself; woodstove deposit is paid; we have enough to cover the tile work and this week's regular crew's labor. Then, failing a rash of sales, it's back to fundraising again in earnest.

So as I said last night, thanks to all of that, we're back to having to raise actual cash. Wings's PayPal link is at the top of the list, but a few good sales would go a long, long way.
