Friday Feature: Early Autumn Winds

Photo copyright Aji, 2015; all rights reserved.
It's our Friday Feature at The NDN Silver Blog, and this month, we'll be highlighting the work of a friend, the nephew of a man we both considered friend and brother. This week, it's a beautifully simple little piece that's perfect for the season, a powerful spirit in vintage guise, deceptively modest in size and price.

The post itself is here. Wings's main page is here. As always, shares are much needed and much appreciated.

rare birds from a warmer land, never before in this place, yet seemingly at home here for a single brilliant day.

#ThrowbackThursday: Where the Thunderbird Flies

It's #TBT at The NDN Silver Blog, and today, we go back about a decade . . . and also more than a century. You see, I was having difficulty coming up with a piece in keeping with the week's underlying themes, and my great-grandfather came to my rescue. In person, or rather, in bird, since he visits me as the small raptor whose name he bore. The story's all at the link.

The post itself is here. Wings's main page is here. This piece, one of his boldest and the only truly classic Thunderbird he's ever done, sold some eight or nine years ago. But if the design speaks to you, he can create a unique version all your own, one whose image speaks directly to your spirit; simply inquire via the Contact form. And, as always, shares are much needed and much appreciated.

A September bird in October's cloak, . . .

a rare bird* whose melody is a lullaby of the Little People, whose message is the whistle of a strong heart and rushing wings.

* Today, Hunger Road begins its next regularly-scheduled eight-day hiatus. For that period, we return to photos.

I'm always interested in how words come to be, how names come to be, and never more so than when they are spoken in the language of my ancestors. I've done this with most of the photosets I've posted on this site, but without making it explicit until now: The text that accompanies each entry is an exploration, sometimes oblique, sometimes express, of the roots of names and the points of connection and separation between the branches of each root. I'm not inclined to explain; it ruins the flow. Simply know that this is where the text is birthed, where it lives and grows and transforms and evolves.

This time around, the theme is "Rare Birds." No, they are not "rare" in the sense of small numbers or endangered status. But each of them will possess some rare quality that makes them unique, whether it is something immanent in its identity and spirit, or merely in some way related the fact that I was able to capture its image — out of time, out of place.

We begin with what is, in this country, perhaps the most obvious bird, the first one whose name I knew as a child. However common, however obvious, however well-known, this little painted spirit of autumn here in this place is still a rare bird.

Adance On Silvery Wings

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's Wings's latest, a pair of earrings utterly simple and spare, otherwise unadorned, yet evoking wholly archetypal imagery. They are beautiful small spirits, wonderfully lightweight, whose dance upon the air captures and holds and releases the light itself.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. As always these days, use the Contact form for inquiries. And, as always, shares of the site links are much needed and much appreciated.

Section VII, Chapter 7; First Line:

It’s a night lit only by the yellow glow of a horned moon, and the leaves murmur and moan as the rising wind carries their voices home.

Ghosts pursue their obsessions from beyond the grave. Sometimes, those obsessions pursue them in turn.

Jewels and Gems: A Stone of Strength, Courage, Hope

Photo copyright Wings, 2015; all rights reserved.
Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's this week's entry in our Tuesday series on Jewels and Gems. This time around, it's a less expensive stone whose given name mimics another, one far more rare and valuable, but it's a beautiful stone in its own right, and its name holds great power.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Of all the works featured in it, all have long since sold save the very last one, which remains available in inventory at a remarkably reasonable price. However, Wings has a good selection of cabs in his supply of stones, and if it speaks to your spirit, he can create and beautifully unique piece all your own; simply inquire via the Contact form. As always, shares of the site links are much needed and much appreciated.
