In Winter, a New World's First Flower

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work conceived for spring that finds fully apt expression in the depths of the cold season. It's a necklace that captures the early budding of the aspen's catkins now: in winter, a new world's first flower, one that we are tasked with raising to fruition.

More snow.

So the forecast was wrong again, this time in our favor: more snow. Not a lot; only flurries. But in a drought like this, we'll take it and be grateful.

Less grateful for the fact of no sleep last night, though. Left knee subluxed late last night, and the pain was too insistent. So everything's behind today, and given how hard walking is, I've gotten only the tiniest fraction of my to-do list done. Haven't had any time this week to push sales, either.

Because we will still (always) need to make sales, and there are plenty of gift-giving events coming up in this new year. But if you're looking for places to donate to folks who need it, watch this space and my other online spaces, because I'll be highlighting them in the weeks to come. Much of the country has just been through a deadly storm, and there's an even more deadly pandemic still raging, utterly unchecked; lots of folks in our various communities are going to need long-term help.

New snow.

Sunny almost blends in with the snow. It's been a mix today, moments when the sky is as white as the earth, then bands of brilliant sun (like this moment) alternating with deep violet blue banks of clouds (like what's coming behind it from the southwest right now). And it's increasingly windy, which means that the deep freeze will hit tonight. But it's new snow, and we need it desperately, and we're glad to have it.

The new year has already begun as busy as the old one ended. Already today I'm on my third load of laundry, dishwasher loaded, wood brought indoors, downstairs swept and vacuumed, other things I'm forgetting . . . and that's nowhere near what Wings has been doing outside in the cold. Plus there's always the work of sales.

Monday Photo Meditation: A New Dawn, a New Day, a New World

Building new worlds.

The skies have been hard at work all day: building new worlds, indeed. This one, allegedly, will ultimately be built of snow. 

We can only hope.

Nothing coming out of the sky yet, but the clouds show every sign of cooperating. The weather people are issuing dire warnings about "major winter storm," and now predicted, instead of less than an inch, four inches of snow.

I remember when "major winter storm" here meant four feet. This is climate collapse, though, so we'll take what we can get.

We are, in relative terms, taking it easy today; lots of work that needs doing and is getting done, but lots that's also being bumped to tomorrow. Winter Skies Dream, and a New World Is Born
