Share requests, and a heads-up for tomorrow (I hope).

I would've posted this much earlier today, but I wanted someone else's fundraiser to have the top slot for as long as possible. Unfortunately, I haven't yet gotten the go-ahead; if I do, it'll post tomorrow instead.

What you see up there is a dummy. 

No, the round block of wood. That's what they call artificial vigas. That's the space I mentioned yesterday — the downstairs bathroom, which, to be up to code, requires a dropped sheetrock ceiling. And so, no viga through that one section of the house (although there'll be one in the front half, across that section of the living room). But without it on that side, the back exterior of the house will look kind of odd with a big gap in the middle. Enter the dummy. On most corporate construction around here (and no small amount of housing construction, too), they're simply plastic. Even those who bother with wood usually just fake up something out of whatever's cheap and at hand. But since they had to resize one of the logs anyway, our guys cut off a segment specifically for this purpose, so that (on the surface, at least) it will match in every way.

This is the way they've approached everything on this job: with the same kind of care as they would if they were building their own homes.

They were off today, and will be off through the weekend. Bright and early Monday morning, they'll be back at it, ready to start the herringbone ceiling. We also have to order and take delivery of all the wood for framing the upstairs. It's going to be a long, expensive week, and one that will likely include five full days of labor for all three guys.

We are just shy of needing $4,700 to close out this stage of the fundraiser, something I need to be able to do as soon as possible, because we're going to need to fund the upstairs, the roof, and the interior work very, very soon. It was thirty-eight degrees at 6:00 this morning, which means that it will likely hit the freezing mark at some point in the coming week — possibly as soon as this weekend. Once those temps become consistent, we're racing against winter, and it's coming early this year.

And as a dear friend reminded me this morning, if you're planning on commissioning work for holiday gifts, now is the time to begin the process. By December, Wings is largely closed to new orders, because there's simply no time left. The creative process requires lead time, and every order will be under way in rotation with several other orders; during the holidays, he often has a dozen different works in various stages of completion at any given moment. [Of course, it's been that way in recent weeks, too.]

Thank you to everyone who's given us a hand so far. I'm hoping for some downtime this weekend to get caught up, but I know better than to bet on it.
