With a vengeance.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Photobombed by a pigeon.

Not that you can tell from that shot, but winter's back. With a vengeance. We're supposed to get snow starting tonight now, and for the next two days. They initially said less than an inch for all of it, but now they say three five inches by tomorrow night, so who knows? All I know is the killer winds are back, and that means pain levels off the charts for me.

And so much to do, so little time to do any of it. Because there's always work to be done, and I do still have to make sales consistently. I'm now back on track on sales (although I'll need to make a second one by week's end to stay that way), because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. I did get Wings's new ring posted last week, but more importantly, I got that incredible new collar-style necklace up, here, and you need to see it, all of it, all of the photos of all five pendants and the beads. It's extraordinary, and it's looking for its home. I also got the new cuff, pendant, and earrings posted a few nights ago, here; the pendant is sold, but the other two remain available for immediate purchase (and they're both ::wow::). All of our links are here; emphasis on sales and testimonials for now:

Red Willow Spirit: When the Water Calls the Sky, and the Sky Answers

Photo copyright Wings, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's an edition of Red Willow Spirit for the hope that lives in the conversations between wounded waters, earth, and sky. It's three images linked by a single work of wearable art, all of them showing the magic that is born when the water calls the sky, and the sky answers in return.

Clownery.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Clowning.

Just a little, actually; that knife is serious business. It's called a drawknife, and it's used for skinning. He has some hide to skin and and prep and tan, and I think that's one of the things on his agenda for the next couple of weeks.

Me? Ugh. Tax prep. That's all clownery, none of it in a good way.

Meanwhile, we have more bad weather on the way. The snow's fine; I can even deal with the cold. It's the winds that are supposed to be back tomorrow, and I'm not going outside except to do evening chores if I can help it. Spirit knows I've got enough to do in here anyway.

Because there's always work to be done, and I do still have to make sales consistently. Monday Photo Meditation: As White Clouds and Blue Sky Paint a Risen River

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a Monday Photo Meditation for a wintry month's end and the unmistakable feel of spring upon the wind. It's an image from just shy of exactly five years ago, capturing a moment near day's end in which we were privileged to watch as white clouds and blue sky paint a risen river.

Impending.

Photo coyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

One snow squall has already passed through; the next one is impending now. There's also apparently a powerful one down in the Albuquerque area, with confirmed wind gusts up to 72 mph, so it's destructive. The canyon between there and here will slow it down, but there's plenty of flat for it gain speed again this side of it.  If I disappear mid-anything, our power's probably out [::knocks wood superstitiously in hopes of preventing it::].

I took that photo about ten minutes ago. I had gone out onto the deck to catch some storm shots, and the moment I walked out, I could hear my namesakes (the cranes). But I couldn't see them; they were too high above Pueblo Peak. When they came into view, they did something I've never seen them do before. Cranes in formation here are migrating (and it's six to eight weeks early, but our weather's all off, so . . .), which means that they're heading in one direction, whichever that happens to be. These were heading westward . . . and then they began circling overhead. They were very high up, so even with the zoom lens I could get a lot in the way of closeups, but I managed to get several shots of them directly overhead before they moved too high again. What a gift . . . I'm still breathless from it.

But there's still work to be done, and I do still have to make sales consistently. I'm now behind three weeks two weeks now only one week on sales (although I'll need to make a second one by week's end to stay on track), because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. As Earth Honors the Medicine of Sky

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work for a day of skies filled with both sun and storm, for heavy weather and an alpine land held in the sky's embrace. It's a pendant in the shades of an alpine forest held gently by a ring of clear and cloudy blues, reminding us that as Earth honors the medicine of Sky, so must we adapt to do the same.

In a puff of cybersmoke.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

We had some sun this morning, but it's all gone now. Even that [::points up at photo::] was a couple of hours ago. It was a Sisley sky then, but there's not even that much sun or shading of clouds in it now; just the same shade of dove white on all sides. Which might mean that we do indeed get the dusting of snow forecast for tomorrow. Much too warm right now, though.

Either way, I'm just hoping for a better week this coming week. And by "better," I mean a week in which I can get my work done, because this week sure as hell has been anything but. I have a sneaking suspicion tomorrow's going to be a problem, though: I have to back up the Web site overnight, do a couple of updates, and see if that fixes the problem (as nearly as our host can tell, the server owners switched to Linux, and it doesn't support a site as old as ours, so I have to upgrade everything, but I also have to back up everything first and hope like hell it doesn't all disappear in a puff of cybersmoke). Anyway, if you try to hit the site and have problems, or things simply don't display as they should, at least you'll know why, and hopefully it will be very temporary.

But I do still have to make sales consistently. I'm now behind three weeks two weeks now only one week on sales, because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. A Rich Medicine of Clay and Clouds, Smoke and Light

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a simple, spare work that reminds us to honor and be grateful for the elemental beauty of our world. It's a work conceived to pay tribute to prayer and ceremony, one dressed in the shades of the day: a rich medicine of clay and clouds, smoke and light.

Cobalt has left us to fly with her sisters.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

I meant to post this last night, but I was so wiped out on every level that I forgot to do it (along with forgetting doses of two different medicines). It was a difficult day by any and every measure, at the end of an equally difficult week . . . in no small part because as of Thursday afternoon, Cobalt has left us to fly with her sisters.

I couldn't find a good image of her by herself, but if you click on the image above, she's the black chicken with white-spotted feathers behind and to the left of the dogs and the tree. It's a shot from August of 2021, when she would've been a little over four years old. She was the last of our silver-laced Wyandottes, a skittish but tough little thing with absolutely magnificent plumage: nominally black and white, but in the sunlight? Silver and intense, deep, iridescent blues, the kind of color that gave her her name, Cobalt, although we mostly called her Cobie for short. [If you've never seen what actual cobalt looks like in its natural state, Wikipedia shows several examples in various stages of refining, and you'll why it suited her so.]

Cobie was independent; she didn't want to be picked up or held, and while she hung with the other girls, she also did her own thing. We have three Australorps, two Americaunas, and one older Rhode Island Red, and she and the Red, Pumpkin, probably felt the greatest affinity for each other, maybe precisely because they were each the last of their kind.

Two weeks ago, I went to put the chickens in for the evening, and after rounding up the other six, I discovered that Cobie was missing. I called and called, to no avail, all while looking around her usual haunts. I finally found her, sitting calmly in broody position on the west side of the open hay barn — not far away at all. But that told me that something was wrong.

She couldn't stand on her right side properly, and at first I thought it was the leg; then she spread the wing for balance and I could see where something had grabbed it — grabbed her, and apparently failed spectacularly when it came to feasting on a chicken dinner, but having inflicted some damage all the same. My first thought was Stormy, because her first weeks of starvation before she came to us have left her a particularly predatory pup, and she has a record already on that score. Thinking back on it, though, I don't think it was her: First, she always behaves with very obvious guilt whenever she's been chasing chickens or wild birds or whatever else catches her attention; and second, Cobie was sitting right out in the open, comfortable and relaxed, with the dogs all running back and forth gong about their doggy business. Cobie was the sort that would have hidden beneath the chicken coop had she had any real fear of the dogs right then.

Which leaves a couple of possibilities: One is that, while our dogs were off woofing over the fence at the neighbor dogs, either the stray dog I sighted on our west boundary about three weeks ago, or, much more likely, a stray coyote, wandered through, grabbed her, and then got scared off. The second possibility is a raptor. The red-tails and we have an unspoken agreement; they never, ever bother our chickens, apparently understanding intuitively that they are family. The harrier, though, shows no such compunction, and she is fierce. I haven't seen her for several weeks, but it's nesting season now, so I have no doubt that she's around. She could easily have grabbed Cobie without getting a firm grip, and dropped her in the process.

At any rate, we initially thought it was just a wing injury, and with no break, we assumed that it would heal. After a week, it became obvious that the real problem as her leg underneath; I had palpated it on the day of the injury, to no visible reaction from her, but presumably some damage at or above the knee joint took some time to manifest. In the meantime, Wings had built her a small straw-bale fort in the coop, and we kept her fed and watered there, with plenty of her beloved mealworm chicken treats, and altough she didn't move around a great deal, she was alert, engaged, and happy.

On Thursday morning, when Wings went into the coop, she was the same: alert, happy, watching his every move, chirping her thanks at him when he gave her her treats, eating them immediately. When I went out about 3:45 that afternoon to put them all back in for the night and feed them, she was gone. It was clear that she had closed her eyes to go to sleep, and while she was asleep, everything just . . . stopped. Which is, I suppose, probably the best possible way to go. But it did tell me that there was something internal going on that we couldn't identify, possibly a talon puncture of an organ or something. The one saving grace is that she had no apparent pain, save when she tried to stand on the injured leg. The vet had planned to come out the day before, but the weather was too bad; My guess is that he couldn't have saved her, but perhaps it was meant to happen this way, with no fear and no trauma from being examined, just being allowed to go to sleep normally . . . and then moving on. Based on body temperature and rigor, my best guess is that her little spirit left for other planes of existence about 2 PM.

Cobie would have been six years old next month; we've learned the hard way that for the "organic" chicks sold locally, that's a pretty long life. [To be clear, I don't think it's that they're "organic" that has made them vulnerable, but more likely, inexperienced breeders.] But for most of those nearly six years, she was a consistent layer, and she was a beautiful bird with a quirky personality all her own. We buried her yesterday morning, with everything she'll need for her journey — including, of course, some of the mealworm treats she loved so much. And yes, she was a chicken, but we miss her.

We love you, little Cobalt girl.  Thank you for all the beautiful brown eggs.

Just miserable.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

That's what it looked like this morning: almost no snow left on the ground, lots of clouds and a little anemic sun, lots of cold wind. Just miserable.

But it's been a miserable week. Today is maybe the worst: I woke up in the early hours of the morning with a migraine AND a badly subluxed right knee, plus two fingers that wont' unbend, and none of that has changed. Getting up at seven did me exactly zero good, because I still didn't get a chance to sit down to my work until one (and it kept getting interrupted thereafter). It's now taking me three times as long to compose a post on the NDN Silver site, because last night, something broke spontaneously on our end, and by that I mean that I had files open and hadn't touched a thing on it for two hours, and in that two-hour period, someone presumably did something to the server that fucked everything up. Today's post is up, but there will be visual changes, and since we don't yet know the source of the problem, I have no idea when (if?) things will be fixed, so this is where we are for now.

Also, we had to take time out to bury Cobie [the chicken] this morning. She was fine yesterday; I think Wings saw her around noon or one and she was alert and cheeping at him. When I went in to take care of them all and check on her about 3:45 PM yesterday, she was gone. Based on rigor and body temp and so forth, it looks as though she went to sleep maybe about two o'clock . . . and just never woke up. So whatever happened to her a couple of weeks ago clearly did some internal damage, although fortunately she wasn't in any pain from that. [If I had to guess, I would blame Stormy, since she already has a record, but she wasn't acting guilty and Cobalt was sitting comfortably out in the open when I found her, so it's just possible that a stray coyote wandered through when the dogs were preoccupied out in one of the fields, and that she managed to get free of it.] Anyway, it was too late yesterday (too cold, and ground too hard to dig), so we laid her to rest this morning. And that is the mood that is infusing my day, so needless to say, it's not a happy one.

But I do still have to make another couple of sales. I'm now behind three weeks two weeks on sales, because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. Friday Feature: The Sunlit Shimmer Of a Still-Frosted Earth

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's our Friday Feature at The NDN Silver Blog, with a trio of related works that remind us to look for the beauty in hard climates and seasons. It's three cuff bracelets manifest as the gifts of the local land, currently delivering the sunlit shimmer of a still-frosted earth.

[Note: Something broke spontaneously on the back end of our site last night, while I had files open and in the two-hour period between my making any edits. Our host migrated us to a new server early this month, and our current best guess is that the server owners changed something on their end that created this, but we don't know for sure. Some things will look a little different until we can get it figured out, so please just bear with us, because there's nothing I can do about any of it until they identify what's what. It's making drafting posts a real problem right now, so believe me, most of the pain is squarely in my lap at the moment.]

So there's that.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

Not much snow left now. No, it's not because it's warmed up much; it's because these trickster winds have scattered all the ground cover everywhere (everywhere except on the ground), and there's little enough left and it's thin enough now that even this anemic sun can melt it.

Still bitter cold.

It's been a hell of a week. The weather was so bad yesterday that the vet had to cancel, so the chicken hasn't been evaluated yet. She's still comfy in her little straw-bale fort, and she loves her chicken treats, so it's fine. My own news yesterday on the medical front was not so pleasant: no more vaccines allowed. I knew this day would come, and it's partly a relief, but also terrifying, especially because absolutely nobody takes any precautions anymore. Which means, essentially, that I can never travel, never go to a public event, never eat out in a restaurant, never go unmasked anywhere, ever again. On the plus side, she also told me that she thinks I can wait another for all the imaging scans from my two cancer scares (medullary thyroid and IBC). My reactions to the vaccines definitely affected both badly, but there's been no change beyond that, and she's positive that it's only that: vaccine reaction. Which means I don't have to shell out tens of thousands of dollars in cash in repeat imaging and biopsies (because the "inconclusive" part of both means the biopsies are inevitable with every screening now). I also don't have to travel repeatedly to. Santa Fe and Albuquerque at ungodly hours in ungodly weather, which aggravates my autoimmune conditions severely.

So there's that.

But I do still have to make another couple of sales. I'm now behind three weeks two weeks on sales, because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. #ThrowbackThursday: Earth Showing Through the Snowy Trails of Winter

Photo copyright Wings, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's #ThrowbackThursday at The NDN Silver Blog, with a #TBT work that dates back between twelve and fifteen years ago, one of a small informal series of works paying tribute to a sacred spirit. It's a signifier of the Sacred White Buffalo, in stone and silver, its patterns like our world now with earth showing through the snowy trails of winter.

I'm not sure whether relief or fear is winning out right now.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

You can't really tell from the photo, but when I took that, the snow was blowing on a perfect horizontal. The winds have been bad up until the last few minutes: horizontal, then spiral , now just heavy angled snow.

The weather's bad enough that our vet asked if he could reschedule coming out to check on the chicken, so we're doing that later this week or next week sometime. My medical stuff this morning took longer (and about $80 more) than anticipated, but we got lucky and got home just as the first light flurries began, before the winds really ramped up. On the plus side, I have my prescriptions refilled and trigger points injected; on the minus, I have been advised that I now fall into the category of people who should not get the vaccine any longer. They've done plenty of damage to me on the autoimmune front, and my doc no longer thinks the trade-off is worth the risk, especially since the government's refusal to manage the pandemic in even the most basic way means that there is not currently a vaccine that's likely to work on the new and mutating variants. I'm not sure whether relief or fear is winning out right now.

And, of course, I'm now behind two weeks one week on sales, because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. A Winter Earth Beneath a Snow-Veiled Sun

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a masterwork perfect for days like today, when capricious weather winds up shielding all the shades of the sun from our view. It's a necklace as true to the spirit of its stones as to its name, channeling medicine to a winter earth beneath a snow-veiled sun.

Finally, those three new works by Wings.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

I know, I know; I've been promising these for days.  Finally, those three new works by Wings.

As I said earlier, it's a cuff, a pendant, and a pair of earrings; the cuff's been done for a few days, the pendant a day or two less than that, but I just couldn't get enough functional time to get them shot, downloaded, uploaded, edited, described, and then posted here. Which is fine, because Wings finally got the earrings done today, so all three can go up at once.

First up is the cuff, above, and it's a fabulous example of old-style freehand work.  It's called Heliocentric (yes, for that reason), and it consists of four separate overlays, a stamped inner band, and incredible freehand texture work on the surface involving hundreds of strikes of the jeweler's hammer. The second piece is a pendant wrought vintage-style, and it's adorable.

"Vintage-style" means that it's created to look like really old, old-school silverwork, and in fact, it's created with old-school. methods, too. This one is called The Nearest Star, and it's hand-made out of sterling silver ingot, melted, poured, hammered, rolled, and stamped all freehand. That means the organic shape is intentional, and the irregular edges and the break in the silver on the left side are left that way very deliberately. Simple stampwork, with the star freehanded out of plain chisel-end lines, and a slider-style bail; ships with an 18" sterling silver snake chain. You can read its full description here.

And finally, the earrings.

These have been in the works seemingly forever, when he created the other two pairs in this shape and style. This last pair got set aside, and the press of other works intervened. It was worth the wait, though. These beauties are called Firebird Sky, and I am positively envious.  A good 2" long, hand-rolled in that feathery pattern, and set with those incredible red tiger's eye cabs, larger than the other stones in this style that we have in inventory. They GLOW. Two things: First, because of their size, they're very slightly on the heavy side, so while they don't bother me, if that's an issue for you, just be aware there's a little extra weight (BIG stones); and second, the bezels are very low-profile, the better to show off the doming ad the chatoyant banding in the cabs, so Wings secured them with jeweler's glue. It shouldn't be an issue, but for folks accustomed to higher bezels, this is why these are so low — they really, really show the fire of the stones. You can read their full description here.

Heavy weather on the way.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It looks benign now, but there's heavy weather on the way. We may not get six inches in 24 hours, as they're forecasting currently, but we'll get something out of it. At the moment, it's still too warm for snow, so it will likely start as freezing rain.

And if what's starting out there now is any indication, the winds are going to be brutal.

Meanwhile, heavy expenses coming up this week: medical for me, and a vet visit for Cobie, the injured chicken, tomorrow. She's doing as fine as possible under the circumstances; no pain as long as she's sitting. But she can't use the right leg, and we need to see if that can be fixed (or, failing that, if she's still getting more joy out of life than not, which she seems to be doing so far, but we need a professional opinion). I have no idea how much that's going to run.  Just the farm call is $75 +tax, IIRC, and I don't have any idea what he's going to wind up doing tomorrow. And it will still be several orders of magnitude cheaper than what I'll be shelling out for my own medical care this week.

I need to make some sales.

And, of course, I'm now behind two weeks on them already, because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago. I did get Wings's new ring posted the other day, but more importantly, I got that incredible new collar-style necklace up, here, and you need to see it, all of it, all of the photos of all five pendants and the beads. It's extraordinary, and it's looking for its home. And still, with luck, I might have the new cuff and pendant posted later today, and possibly the new earrings, too, all available for immediate purchase. All of our links are here; emphasis on sales and testimonials for now:

Red Willow Spirit: As the Snow Recedes From a Still-Cold Earth

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's an edition of Red Willow Spirit for unseasonal conditions and existential dangers amidst stormy weather to come. It's two new images linked by a single work of wearable art, reminding us that as the snow recedes from a still-cold earth, we need to heed the warnings it shows us now.

Meantime, there's so much work to be done.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

It's hard to get a focused shot through double-paned glass; this is about the best I could do. That was just before dawn this morning, as the dark was beginning to lift and the first light was spreading across the sky. This is not the whole herd, but it's a good chunk of it, and they had, up to that point, been resting in the snow in the field right outside our bedroom window. Of course, traffic ruins that, but it's far safer for them to be up in the backcountry by full light anyway. They've been coming here for fourteen winters now. They're safe here, we keep our distance, and it keeps them off the highway.

And we're supposed to have more winter weather. You wouldn't know it by today's temperatures, edging perilously close to fifty already, although every time the wind kicks up, it feels 20 degrees colder. Tomorrow is supposed to bring rain turning to snow, and by Wednesday night, another five inches of the white stuff. We can only hope.

Meantime, there's so much work to be done.

Monday Photo Meditation: A World That Looks Like Winter Still

Photo copyright Wings, 2023; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a Monday Photo Meditation for the continued presence of badly-needed snow in a world that already looks recklessly ahead to spring. It's a reminder of the small beauties and gifts that require our notice now, and our gratitude, along with thanks for the medicine of a world that looks like winter still.

It'll be another cold one tonight.

Photo copyright Aji, 2023; all rights reserved.

More snow today: a couple of inches or so, maybe three. Yesterday's warmth melted a lot of the snow that was on the ground, so it's a welcome addition. We're supposed to get more on Wednesday. It's stopped falling now, just in the last half-hour or so, and the wind's rising fast.

It'll be another cold one tonight.

And there's so much work yet to do. The one problem with winter is that it requires so much in terms of outside chores that we lose hours on end for all the rest of the work. I don't know whether Wings will have the pendant and earrings finished by tonight or not; he's had to spend most of the day on outdoor labor. Mine's been mostly indoors, but it keeps me from getting any writing done, never mind anything else.

And, of course, I'm now behind two weeks on sales, because as always, I still need to bring in one sale a week for us to break even, and I haven't managed that since three weeks ago.
