A Web Across the Sky

Photo copyright Aji, 2016; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a work that fits the feel of the day in this place, with more storms already in the offing. It's a solitaire built around a Skystone, one webbed by the earth that simultaneously evokes the lightning's web, a powerful portal that ushers in the rain beneath a crackling sky.

Friday Feature: Checkerboarded Clouds and Spiderweb Snows

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's our last Friday Feature of April, one that turns out to be especially apt for this particular morning here in this place. It's a checkerboard that crisscrosses seasons and weather, creating a world's web of snow and earth and catkins waiting to turn green.

#TBT: Spinning Visions, Weaving Dreams

Photo copyright Aji, 2016; all rights reserved.

It's #ThrowbackThursday at The NDN Silver Blog, and today, it's a trip back in time only six short weeks, to a work commissioned by a dear friend. Her request and Wings's inspired skill produced a pair of unique, highly stylized, spirit-infused "dreamcatchers," all in beautiful shades of blue and black and silver.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. These are obviously one of a kind, but if the general style speaks to your spirit, Wings can create a version uniquely your own (and he has the square cabs in a half-dozen different brightly-colored stones); simply inquire via the site's Contact form. And, as always, sales are much needed, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

Life, In Its Own Good Time

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a small and familiar spirit, one that has been part of Wings's inventory for a time now. She has much to teach us, with varying lessons drawn from different indigenous traditions, but they all link up in one way: They all counsel a life well-lived — in part, by heeding the truth that some things can only happen in their own good time.

Indigenous Arts: Weaving Webs and Guarding Gates, Catching Dreams and Healing Spirits

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's this week's entry in our series on Indigenous Arts. Today, we explore the catching of dreams, and the spirits who make it possible.

Monday Photo Meditation: A Season of Small Spirits

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a photo meditation for this season, one that seems enervating and disempowering, but should instead be a celebration of the work of small spirits. It's a lesson for me, delivered by Grandmother Spider, but one we all know fundamentally, one we know we should center rather than ignore.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. As always, the photo remains available for purchase in any of the usual three formats; simply inquire via the site's Contact form. Also as always, sales are much needed, so shares of the site links are much appreciate.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a pair of Wings's sunlit works. It's also a pair of his most modestly priced pieces, thanks to the unusual material from which they're made, but they hold a powerful spirit nonetheless in the form of the light itself.

It's our Friday Feature at The NDN Silver Blog, and today, we resume our look at the pottery of Camille Bernal with an iconic design that seems to embody the light. It's her Art Deco-style vase wrought in the shape of a traditional olla, in warm welcoming shades and a sensuous shape.

#Throwback Thursday: The Light That Is Our Spirit, Our Individual and Collective Sense of Self

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

It's #TBT at The NDN Silver Blog, and this week, we go back a decade or so to one of Wings's old signature series. It's a symbol of healing, of identity, of creativity, of self — and in this instance, a chance to hold a little of the light and the spirit of the sun in one's hand.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Dancing With the Spirit of the Light

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's Wings's latest masterwork, completed only an hour or so ago. It's a piece of breathtaking beauty and extraordinary power and spirit, one that has been in the works for some time, and I was privileged to have a small role in its creation. The dedication at the end was all Wings's own idea, and reveals much about the loss of light here right now.

Indigenous Arts: Spirit as Symbol and Symbol as Spirit

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's this week's edition of our series on Indigenous Arts. Today, we continue with the month's theme of Native symbols as they appear in Native art — this time, by way of representations of the spirits (around here, known as katsinam, or kachinas). Lilith puts in an appearance, too (and, yes, it fits).

Monday Photo Meditation: Spirits of Stone and Light

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's a photo meditation for a snowy Monday morning in mourning. It's an image that reminds us that we no lock on love or loss, nor on obligation; the spirits here bear witness as they have done since the time before time, and will still be doing so in their many forms and faces long after we are gone, as well.

We buried our boy today.

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

A couple of days ago, as I was walking out to the studio, a mourning cloak danced past me on the breeze, headed eastward, and I felt something cold clutch at my heart. They are aptly named, these butterflies: They tend to appear when death is at the door, even if we don't know it yet.

I shook it off. Two of the horses had been in full laminitis flare for months; all three of the dogs had fought off a nasty reaction to something in the last couple of weeks. Griffin's CVS had just flared again, but that's by now an annual occurrence at this time of year, and there's little for it but time. He's always bounced back just fine, and there was no reason to think this would be any different.

It was different.

At five o'clock yesterday evening, with snow falling softly outside, our boy walked on, over the threshold and on along that western road to The Interstices and beyond, to the place where the Thunderbird flies, to a place where we cannot yet follow, and my heart is broken into too many pieces ever to be repaired.

I don't think I can make anyone understand. You have experienced this sort of relationship with another being, or you haven't, and if it's the latter, nothing I say will make the slightest bit of sense. I have never had such a one before, nor will I again; Griffin was entirely one of a kind, and there is no succeeding that.

Sacred Directions, Sacred Hoop, Sacred Space

Photo copyright Aji, 2016; all rights reserved.
Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's Wings's latest, completed late Thursday. The design seems prescient now, in light of recent events here. We're both feeling as though we've been swept into a vortex with no warning, and anything that orients us back to the sacred hoop of our world and its directions is welcome right now.

If we are lucky, he will someday walk with us again

In dreams and visions

Note: There will be no fundraising post tonight, nor for at least the next four days. I know most will never understand this, but we have lost our guide tonight, and we are in mourning in its purest form.

This boy needs some help.

Photo copyright Aji, 2016; all rights reserved.

Update:  He's gone. 5:00 PM MDT. More later. My heart and spirit are gone with him.

Folks, whatever ya got, my boy needs it.

I hate spring. Absolutely hate it. The winds are enough for me to despise it with every fiber of my being, because they are so incredibly destructive to my own body. But what it does to the animals is so much worse. It's colic and founder season for the horses.

For Griffin, it's CVS season.

No, that's not the drug chain. It's short for Canine Vestibular Syndrome, a mostly idiopathic (save age, and, in his case, a TBI seven years ago) condition in which the juncture at which a dog's brain and inner ear become grossly inflamed, and it creates a particularly nasty form of vertigo. When you have the kind of rapid-fire changes in barometric pressure we've had the last few days (to say nothing of today, which has been the worst yet), it flattens him. He can't walk; he staggers, drops, falls. He has clonus in his limbs. The vertigo causes such nausea that he can't eat and mostly can't drink water, either, leading to dehydration. I'm reduced to crouching on the floor, ankle be damned, and syringing him with Pedialyte. I've been dealing with this for days, but today has been nonstop. And the longer the weather stays a mess, the longer he won't be able to eat, and it just becomes a vicious cycle, with no fuel in his system to help fight the inflammation.

And the superstitious side of me is damning myself for causing it, because in trying to help someone else's dog, I invoked this goddamn thing as a possibility, and now he's paying for it. Again. This is either the third or fourth spring in a row that he's dealt with this, and it's a bad one this time around.

So I'm begging: prayers, good vibes, whatever magical mystery stuff ya got goin', send some of it his way. He's been my soulmate for more than fifteen years now. We need Griffin, and he needs to be healthy again.

Thanks.

Less than $2K from the half-way point!

Yes! We're now less than $2K to the halfway point for this stage of our home-building project! Which is good, considering that we may break ground in as little as a week, if the foundation blueprints are done and the weather cooperates (and the latter is probably the iffiest part of it right now). The latest arrival is the list of vigas: dimensions, including diameter and length. There's a place where Wings can cut them himself, and in between planning for the first round of irrigation, changing horses' clogs, trying to get Griffin on his feet, and all the usual chores that accompany home, land, gallery, and his creative processes, he (probably with one of the guys) will be heading up there to get them. Speaking of the creative process, and the gallery, it will help us tremendously to have folks share the link to Wings's Web site, too; sales are crucial right now.

In the meantime, the usual drill still holds: Please continue to share the link to our YouCaring page, using the widgets and/or the link on the page itself. Please also spread around the widget code found in the lower right-hand corner of the page; that will give you the image shown above, complete with running total. Profound thanks to everyone who has given us a hand thus far, with special thanks today to our latest donor.

Tonight and tomorrow are going to be spent catching up on thank-yous and other correspondence, and trying to run our horse vet to ground to get specific instructions needed for Shade's hooves. This weekend will involve clogging both horses and catching up on a thousand and one things, always assuming I haven't overdone it on the foot today and can actually function again tomorrow. If I haven't replied to you yet, I will; never fear. I'm just overwhelmed right now.

Friday Feature: A World In Motion

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.
Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's our Friday Feature for a week in which we've explored themes of guidance and direction, of mapping and movement and a world in motion. Today, it's Wings's personal favorite among the works of his niece, and it's one that speaks to me of elemental powers, of movement through the seasons, of forward motion as we journey around the hoop.

Dom, Five Years Gone

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

Lilith was four short days ago. Now it's Dom.

She left us longer ago, in 2011. I'd been in Washington for over a month, and we didn't even know she was ill. Two weeks after my return, she was gone. Cancer, throughout her whole little body, with an especially large tumor suddenly distending her stomach. She was, as near as anyone could tell, roughly eleven and a half, making her the second-oldest of our pack at that time. While I was gone, she'd learn to ride on the back of the ATV with Wings, and that is his fondest memory of her.

Like all the rest, she'd had a hard life, too: used as a bait dog; left front leg broken and left unrepaired for who knows how long, then a botched surgical attempt at repairing it that was already infected by the time she found her way to me. She was by turns skittish and fierce, and fiercely independent, and wanted nothing more than to take up space on your lap (or shove you out of bed). I've never known such a small dog to take up so much space, much more than any of the large ones.

She took up a lot of space in our hearts, too. It's hard now to recall exactly how huge the void was in this place when morning rolled around on April 15th of that year. Harder still to believe that it's been five years already. Her name was officially Domina, the feminine of Domino for her little half-mask, but also for the Latin used for the feminine of "teacher" or "master." She was a beta girl, or maybe even gamma or delta, but she could alpha right up when she damn well felt like it; she gave orders, and she usually got her way. Her name fast became Dommy, Dommers, Dom-Dom, or just Dom for short.

She left us in my arms, on my lap, about 10:42 PM on the night of the 14th. It was bitterly cold that year, so we wrapped her in a blanket, but we had to leave her burial for morning, and the ground was unbelievably hard for mid-April, but Wings managed it. She is with Lilith and Major, beneath the big blue spruce by the garden, and in a little while, I'll limp my way outside to set some cedar on her resting place.

The Saturday after she left us, I was going in and out to shake the rugs. I took one inside, went out with another, and saw that something had changed: At the foot of the stairs there was a little divot in the earth that had been empty a moment before. Now, it contained a sherd of ancient pottery, the old black-on-white that predates the micaceous variety in this area. The earth here still tosses them up periodically, random gifts of the spirits, but not on the lawn where grass covers everything. I know, rationally, that a magpie dropped it: a black and white bird with a black and white sherd for a black and white dog. I still think Dom arranged it, and the sherd is still in my medicine bag.

Thank you, little Dom-Dom Girl. We love you.

Miracles and Setbacks

Photo copyright Aji, 2016; all rights reserved.
See that up there? That was what we spent the afternoon doing. We spent the morning holding horses for X-rays.

Yes, ankle and all. I torqued it again, too, but good. Now I'm sitting with it back up again, hideously uncomfortably. But shit's gotta get done.

Today was marked by miracles and setbacks, expensive ones.

First off, Griffin's in bad shape. It'll pass, but the longer it takes, the longer his condition continues like this, and everything's working against everything else. He's in the throes of his annual spring CVS flare, and unless and until the promised storm hits, either tomorrow night or Saturday, he'll get no relief. He can barely stand, much less walk; he hasn't been able to eat for more than 48 hours; he's weak, dizzy, and absolutely exhausted. And so am I, trying to cope.

Then there are Cree and Shade. The miracle continues to be Cree, overall, although she wasn't doing well this morning. The setback (in addition to Grif) is Shade.

The details are all over the jump, along with today's request for shares.

#TBT: Mapping Secret Places and Sacred Spaces

Photo copyright Wings, 2016; all rights reserved.

It's #ThrowbackThursday at The NDN Silver Blog, and today, it's a trip back in time about five years, to a work that was simultaneously incredibly simple and extraordinarily complex. It featured a truly fabulous stone, Damele turquoise in shades of jade and emerald, a gorgeous representation of Grandmother Turtle's shell that formed our world, set atop a band of spare imagery and deep and hidden secrets.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. The stone obviously cannot be replicated, but if the style and symbolism speak to you, Wings can create a version uniquely your own, simply inquire via the site's Contact form. And, as always, sales are much needed (hoo-boy, especially today), so shares of the site links are much appreciated.

I can't keep up.

I especially can't keep up when I'm stuck here with my left foot two feet off the floor. That's when it's not stuck in a bucket of ice-cold water mixed with apple cider vinegar and Epsom salts. [Sigh] just call me Cree, or Shade; they both know this soak routine well by now.

Speaking of which, they both get to cost us a small fortune tomorrow. This, while Grif has had a massive CVS flare, can't eat, and can barely walk, and I can barely move. I'm also at the point where I have to order more iron, and more glucose test strips for Wings and She-Wolf, and more of the high-grade bilberry for She-Wolf, because in the two weeks without it (since all three dogs got sick from taking the local brand), her eyesight has deteriorated noticeably. I have house-related questions that need responses (windows, vigas, interior floor), correspondence that needs handling, inquiries (of the non-purchase sort) that need answers, paperwork that needs finishing, and about a thousand other things. And Wings has had to pick up a certain number of additional chores, things I can't do right now with a basically non-working left leg/ankle/foot. Which is . . . um . . . most things.

So. You know what's coming next.

We need to keep the link to our YouCaring page out there, so please share it via the widgets and/or the actual link on the page itself. Please also grab the widget code from the box in the lower right-hand corner and post it wherever you can, to get the auto-updating image above. Many thanks to everyone who's given us a hand with this thus far.

Also, please share the link to Wings's Web site while you're at it, because we need to make some regular sales to pay for all the non-house-building-related expenses (our electric bill alone is unreal, thanks to being stuck in this tin can, where we mostly can't use the propane for heat). I shudder to think what tomorrow will bring, but it's a necessary step if we've going to keep the girls alive. After bringing them this far, there really isn't any choice. Oh, and if you own and love Wings's work, please submit a testimonial; instructions for how to do so can be found here. If you need inspiration, examples can be found here. Which reminds me, I have one I haven't even had time to upload yet . . . [mumblegrumble].

Mapping a World of Fire and Ice

Now posted at The NDN Silver Blog, it's Wings's latest, mapping a world of fire and ice. These earrings embody symbolism that holds lessons for us today, urgent ones that I find myself taking to heart this morning. They also coordinate with a pair of other works, one a cuff and the other a ring.

The post is here. Wings's main page is here. Inquiries via the site's Contact form. And, as always, sales are much needed, so shares of the site links are much appreciated.
