I've written routinely elsewhere about Wings's work with a jeweler's saw. That's it up there. When I say the blade is filament-thin? That's what I mean, because it is. If you enlarge the photo, you'll see the big open frame that holds it; the blade is like finely serrated wire about the gauge of an Eversharp lead, and it bends to accommodate both the stress and the lines and angles needed.
And sometimes, it breaks.
Not today, though. What you see there is him cutting out the backing of one of five separate hand-made bezels on a major work that's been in the works for a long time now. It's an old-style collar necklace, essentially a gorget, one that will have a giant center cab flanked by medium and smaller ones on either side. All turquoise. [The turquoise alone was a small fortune; it's the good stuff.]
And this is only one of . . . maybe a dozen different pieces in various stages on his workbench at the moment? With probably another two dozen in the conceptualization stage, doing backflips in his brain right now. That's the way this goes, which means the more studio time he gets, the more and more rapidly they get finished. Unfortunately, this summer has been exceptionally bad for "studio time." Hopefully this week will change some of that.
I've been dealing with the same problem with all of my own work: constant interruptions, derailments, emergencies, and al the ensuing backlogs. I had intended to get a giant laundry list of things done and off my to-do list this weekend, but yesterday's pain and fatigue levels made that impossible. So then I pinned my hopes to today, and . . . nope. Yesterday and today have been a couple of the worst days I've had, health-wise, in memory, and believe me, that's saying something, none of it good. I've talked a bit about why elsewhere and I don't have the energy to repeat it all here, but there are some new complications, and these are the sort that might require a nasty and expensive surgical intervention down the road, but in the meantime, they will most certainly require a bunch of expensive labs and even more costly imaging work.
And since this has been a ridiculously expensive week [month, year], this only adds to that pressure. If we can just continue to make regular weekly sales, we'll be fine. But we need to make those sales now; I posted seven new works by Wings this past week, but I've got to sell them for it to make any difference. There's a lot of gorgeous new work up, and that includes several pairs of brand new earrings are a more modest price point than most of this work. And to that end, links are here:
