Today, a pair of yellow birds: a mated pair of young evening grosbeaks.
Supposedly, they're indigenous to the area. In all these years, we've never seen one here.
They discovered the feeder this morning, and they may as well have been in bird heaven. They arrived with a clan of red and tan house finches, seemingly treating them as extended relatives. A little skittish, but not too afraid; they left and returned, left and returned. When I finished my morning practice of burning cedar and walked back, they'd migrated to the topmost branches of one of the aspens nearest the house, chirping and singing in clear solo bell-like tones. They didn't twitch so much as a tailfeather when I passed beneath them.
I think they'll be back tomorrow.
